This is a list of backup software, software which performs data backups, and providers of managed backup services.

Free software

Programs listed here have a Free Software compatible or Open Source license. Freeware is proprietary.

For large networks of systems

  • AMANDA BSD - Popular network based backup software.
  • BackupPC GPL - Network based backup software with some cutting edge features like de-duplication and HTML reports.
  • Bacula GPL - a set of computer programs that permit you (or the system administrator) to manage backup, recovery, and verification of computer data across a network of computers of different kinds.
  • DIBS BSD - Backing up data by exchanging it with peers on the Internet.

For small networks of systems

  • backupninja GPL - A meta-backup system.
  • dump - The classic UNIX filesystem dumper.
  • rdiff-backup GPL - Uses rsync library to implement a Mirror + Reverse Incrementals style repository.

For single systems

  • Cobian Backup GPL - supports FTP, compression, encryption, incremental/differential backup

  • DAR GPL - Disk Archiver. Makes archives of directories and files that can be encrypted and spread across multiple removable media.

  • duplicity GPL - Makes remote encrypted backups using rsync and gnupg.
  • rsback Artistic - Uses rsync to make rotating backups with hard links.
  • rsync GPL - Powerful tool for maintaining mirrors and much more.
  • SystemImager GPL - Imaging/cloning tool for Linux.
  • tar - The classic UNIX file aggregator.
  • Zmanda Recovery Manager GPL - perl utility for MySQL databases.
