Baldi's Basics Classic (or Baldi's Basics in Education and Learning) is the original version of Baldi's Basics Plus that was first released on itch.io on March 31, 2018, by Basically, Games!. It was released on Game Jolt on May 27, 2018. Although it was partly but not completely a full game, it is available on itch.io and Game Jolt for free as a similar type of "demo", only consisting of nine characters, eleven items, and only one subject (math) in the non-randomly generated Schoolhouse with no other features.

Soon after V1.3.2 was released, on July 24, 2018, a Kickstarterwas launched, made to have a Baldi's Basics full game with new characters, randomly generated maps, new subjects, field trips, and more. The Kickstarter was successful, raising $61,375 out of $50,000.

The mobile version was released on February 1, 2019, for the Android platform. It has been mentioned for release on mystman12's Twitter and Kickstarter page. According to the responses on his Twitter, the game is free and has no ads.The game can be downloaded on Kindle Fire and Samsung. The iOS port is officially released on December 12, 2019. The game was released on Google Play and App Store on December 17, 2019.

Plot

A friend of the protagonist forgets seven notebooks at the local schoolhouse but can't get them himself because he'd be late for "eating practice", so he asks the protagonist to fetch them. Once the player arrives, Baldi, one of the teachers, quizzes the player with simple math problems every time they find a notebook (three per book), with the promise of a prize if they answer all of them correctly. Baldi is also very easy to anger and, after presenting the player with impossible math problems, will start to chase them when they inevitably fail to answer them correctly. The protagonist is forced to continue to search for all the other notebooks while also avoiding other students and various obstacles.

Alternate ending

If the player chooses to answer every question wrong in seven notebooks, they will experience an ending which includes a distorted version of Baldi and another hidden character, Null, asking the player to destroy the game, before the game closes itself.

Gameplay

his game has two modes, story and endless!

• Story mode requires you to collect 7 notebooks and then escape the school to win. The more notebooks you collect, the faster Baldi will become! Simple, but very challenging.

• Endless mode is a challenge to see how many notebooks you can collect before being caught by Baldi. Over time Baldi will speed up, but each time you successfully solve the problems in a notebook he'll slow down. The longer you can keep his speed down, the more notebooks you can collect!

This is an official port of the original game, with touch screen controls! Check out the options menu to adjust them to your liking!

At the start of the game, Baldi appears, greeting and waving to the player. As the player goes to a classroom to collect the first notebook, they will see the You Can Think Pad showing a set of three math problems presented by Baldi. In the first set of math problems, everything is normal. However, when the player obtains the second notebook, the third and final question is replaced by an unintelligible string of numbers, and Baldi's voice will become glitched. This question has no correct answer and replaces all final questions from the second notebook onward.

When the player gets their first math problem wrong, Baldi will chase the player by slapping a ruler on his hand. At this point, the other characters will appear. The more math problems the player answers incorrectly, the faster Baldi will chase them.

Once the player finds all 7 notebooks, Baldi will seem to congratulate the player before he screams "GET OUT WHILE YOU STILL CAN!!!", followed by a laugh. Baldi will now be moving at his fastest as there are no more notebooks, which means there are no more questions to get wrong. Now the player must find four exits in any order. Once the player finds one of the exits, everything will become red(except characters, items, and sprites) and the doorway will become a solid wall with a map of the Schoolhouse on it. Three of these exits are fake, the last one the player reaches being the real one they can finally leave out of. Before the player tries to exit, a loud noise is heard in the background.

Development and release

The game was initially made as an entry in the annual Meta-Game Jam on Itch.io, where it received 2nd place. In an interview with Game Developer, the game's developer cited the 1996 game Sonic’s Schoolhouse as his main inspiration. The game was originally going to be made for the 3DS using SmileBasic as confirmed by Mystman12 in TetraBitGaming’s video.

The developer launched a Kickstarter campaign for the game, where he announced that an early access prototype for the full game, titled Baldi's Basics Plus, would be released on June 12, 2020. The Kickstarter raised a total of $61,375. Development has been ongoing ever since, with additional content such as new characters, new items, minigames, challenge modes, 'field trips' and a new layout for the schoolhouse, incorporating multiple levels and procedural generation, similar to a first-person roguelike and dungeon crawler hybrid game.

On Oct 21, 2022, a remaster and compilation of three games on PC platforms titled Baldi's Basics Classic Remastered was released, which includes the original game, Baldi's Basics Birthday Bash, and a demo version of Baldi's Basics Plus, with additional features such as fun settings and more alternate endings.

Reception

Despite its poor graphics, it became highly popular for its humor, difficulty and surreal gameplay. Popular YouTubers such as DanTDM, Markiplier, Jacksepticeye, PewDiePie, 8-BitRyan and Kindly Keyin made videos on the game, helping to boost its popularity.

This game was an entry in the annual Meta-Game Jam in 2018, and it received 2nd place, with Farfalle OS just barely in 1st. It has gained high praise from its fans, developing a large fandom. The game has reached over 1 million downloads and it is still growing.
