The History of the British Isles has been one of struggle and competition between the separate nation-states that occupy the various parts of the islands of Great Britain and Ireland.
Today the British Isles is generally regarded as including the countries of the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland and the Isle of Man. (Note that the terminology The British Isles is sometimes considered obsolete or even offensive in Ireland if it is used to include Ireland.)
