Designer babies is the phrase coined by officials to describe babies who are "designed" by parents before they are actually born. Through in vitro fertilization, parents are able to tweak the child's traits so the child can have the desired eye color, hair color, gender, etc. Although this hasn't really occured yet, there have been some 'designer babies' in a sense. Lately, in vitro fertilization was originally used to get rid of hereditary diseases in the parent so it wouldn't be passed on to offspring. Many officials feared that by tweaking the cells that caused the disease, parents would want to tweak the cells that caused undesired external traits. This would kindle many social issues concerning the right of a child to have a natural selection of its traits.
