WikiProject India Newsletter: Volume II, Issue 1 - January 2007

Project News
  • Project tagging:After a brief edit war over the addition of {{WP India}} to ancient archaeological sites now located in Pakistan, a "pre" parameter was introduced to remove the ROI flag from the template for pre-1947 articles, following discussion. After another large discussion on ANI alleging that the automated tagging by Ganeshbot and LostBot was "nationalistic", Ganeshbot was briefly blocked. Currently, the bots are again in action.
  • Swastika on Hinduism templates:Recently, an extremely large and at times emotional debate broke out regarding the use of the swastika on Hinduism templates, given its association with Nazism. As a result, {{Hindu Links}} now contains an educational message about the use of the swastika, as discussion on a more permanent resolution continues.

    accusations

What are you accusing me of? A troll(or more correctly a sock/meatpuppet) starts destoying the work of 3 descent editors and you accuse me.If you dont like my edits then we should get a neutral admin to deal with this.I was enraged by the comments you made on the Pakistan discussion page.If you don't like my style of editing then, let's ask a neutral party to intervine.

Blocking every single user you disagree with will only bring more attention to this issue in my opinion.Nadirali نادرالی

It is incivil of you to accuse me so randomly and without basing your accusations on any evidence. Please see wikipedia no personal attacks policy.Comment on my edits not on my ethnicity or personality.Nadirali نادرالی

    Re:Arbcom

We are ready to deal with this.I must ask Fowler and Islescape as witnesses to this.I have evidence not just against you,but the others as well.I feel you made the right decision as this is the only way to resolve this. I am leaving now.I must go for lunch.--Nadirali نادرالی

I have posted my statement.Let's see what you have to throw at us.--Nadirali نادرالی

    my alleged attack on Muhajirs

How can you accuse me of attacking Muhajirs when I AM a Muhajir from my father's side.My father is a Muhajir of Azerbaijani ancestry from his mother's side.Therefor he is of Azerbaijani descent born in what is today india. I still stand by my claims that I dislike their mentality of being too conservitive.I once had a Greek tutor who would repeatidly attack his people because he felt they were too arrogant.Does that make him an "anti-Greek".

If you think my comments were attacking Muhajirs, then atleast you can call me a "self-hating Muhajir" rather than an "anti-Muhajir" which is quite ridiculous and somewhat quite laughable :-)--Nadirali نادرالی

Who said I cared about DaGizza's background? If you're reffering to the comment I made on the history of India talkpage,he asked me to post if I regarded him as Pakistani or not and even posted on my talkpage to make sure I'd see his question on the talkpage.

As for my comments regarding the Muhajirs,I commented on the typical Muhajir mentality and the recent terrorism commited by the MQM.And I still stand on my claim the aticle is biased which is why I put the NPOV check on it. It's called commenting on content, not contributers

The reason why we're at arbcom is not because we're disrupting you're agenda.I really don't think we'd be there at this moment if you had not seen Unre4L and I pointing out your abuse of wikipedia as an admin.

Also stop telling me about "giving around my background".I did that for a reason to rebuff your silly accusions about "attacking Muhajirs".--Nadirali نادرالی

Really? Then is it a coincidence that the case was opened roughly 16 minitues after my complaint of your conduct and that 3 users (Unre4L,Fowler and I) agree on that factor.

Tell me does criticising people for being too religious attacking anyone's religion? The only "evidence" you seem to have is words by us twisted to suit your alligations.

I've seen many of the comments you've made to Unre4L and Szhaider as well as Fowler and I find them nowhere close to civility.I really think you should apologise to them. You've apologised to Fowler, but not Unre4L or Szhaider. Now if you'll excuse me there's some articles I'd like to work on.--Nadirali نادرالی

    Pakistani civilization

I wrote the article.Don't chase Unre4L,I wrote it.

I don't see who it's hurting as it's an important part of our history.--Nadirali نادرالی

Deletion of an article, the content of which you were completely ignorant to.

    Dear Sir,

I would like to bring your attention to an article that you deleted on the 2nd of March 2007. This article carried the title of 'Nicholas William Abrahams' and told the story of his interesting and influential life.

I would like to ask you if you in fact read the article before you deleted it, or if you deleted it blindly. Perhaps taking advantage of the fact that it was a preliminary article, to be added to when the full facts became apparent.

A quick read of your profile makes it quite clear that you are not English, have never been English and have no connection or specialist knowledge of local English history. There are very few, if any, articles on the Internet about the history of Kent, so I don't believe you could have formed any knowledge, let alone any 'specialist' knowledge from the Internet. The only other source of information about the founding of the ancient castle town of Tonbridge would be the ancient town of Tonbridge itself. Most specifically town records and the castle visitor’s centre. You have not visited either of these since the article was published to Misplaced Pages, as I take an active role in both; therefore knowing who has and who hasn't been requesting specific information from the vast resources we hold.

You also state on your profile " arrchaeology, Indian history, Hindu mythology, the Indian independence movement and Hinduism, but I plan to diversify my contributions far and wide." By far and wide do you mean to one specific town in the heart of the garden of England?

"I was emotionally motivated to write about the Political integration of India and its architect Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and I dare say that these articles are the most documented accounts you'll ever find on the Internet." Is a statement made by you on your profile. Being emotionally motivated to write about something is fantastic I take my hat off to you for that. How would you like it if I deleted those articles, which meant a great deal to you, without even consulting you? Because that is what you have done to me. I don't know how things are done in the United States, but if this were in England and one did not have the ability to hind behind the invisibility cloak that is the world wide web, these actions would be viewed as disgraceful.

I would like these articles reinstated, with a full apology.

If this is not done within a reasonable time scale, then I shall be taking full advantage of every option open to me regarding this matter.

The Lord Mayor —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Smellysocks (talkcontribs) 21:34, 2 March 2007 (UTC).

I do apologise for any personal attack I made upon you. I was under the impression that Misplaced Pages is for people who have a personal detailed knowledge of a subject to write about it and for those that do not hold the same level of knowledge on the subject to acquire knowledge through reading what the knowledgeable person has submitted, not delete it without any given reason.

I assume the article will be reinstated now and take your silence on the matter in hand as admittance that you were wrong to delete the page.

    Smellysocks 21:59, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

    I have a question b/c you're an admin

I have a question about a situation which I don't understand that happened on Misplaced Pages. User:Lucky 6.9 banned long-time User:Zaphnathpaaneah for a minor infraction of etiquette against User:Lucky 6.9. This sounds very heavy-handed, so I have decided not to discuss it the administrator who banned Zaph. I fear s/he would ban might ban me as an abuse of power to scare away any criticism of his/her actions. The strange thing is that the signatures where Lucky 6.9 talked to Zaph are there on Zaph's talk page, but the user contributions that would show this discussion are not in Lucky 6.9's user contributions. Lucky 6.9 has administrator banning powers, but has no talk page and has no user page. I don't understand the situation, so maybe you could provide more insight.----Tea 03:21, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

    Montreal screwjob

I thought I'd inform you that your Montreal screwjob article is the first professional wrestling related article to be promoted beyond good article status. A few of us have tried with other articles (first one editor tried with Konnan and then later I tried again with CM Punk) but have all been rejected for one reason or another. Congratulations on succeeding in where many of us, including myself, have failed. –– Lid 08:32, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

In regards to the article I feel the image of Shawn holding Bret in the shooter which Hebner rings the bell should be re-instered into the article. Although the FAC attacked the fair use of the image it meets every criteria set out by WP:FUC, especially as getting such an image again is impossible. There are other instances that support this. On a personal level as you seem to be much superior to I in regards to prose could you take a look at my attempt at a featured article, CM Punk, and give me some feedback? I can pretty much get citations for any part of the article but it was rejected for a few reasons (See Misplaced Pages:Featured article candidates/CM Punk, in which previous to your attempt it was the closest to actually passing featured article status). At the time I recommended it the article had over 80 citations, but unfortunately they were pretty weak but I can replace them all if need be. –– Lid 14:44, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
One thing that has changed to the article is that someone sometime ago removed all the refs to the individual match going ons. There is a problem on a base level with featured articles in that there is no "fictional" character featured article that can be used to base this off. Part of the debate over the FAC was whether I needed to cite every matches source or no need for them at all or simply show the match occurred. In the FAC you'll see I at one point mention possibly listing the DVD that the event took place in as the primary source and even that went unresolved. It's very hard to source the character, even one which is not truly a character in the truest sense. –– Lid 14:54, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
Near as I can tell the only published sources where you will see him mentioned are the Observer, PWI and the official WWE magazine. The best place for information I found were his, and others, shoot interviews however finding shoots where wrestlers tell you a lot about another individual is hard enough. There are a plethora of online sources, but of course this leads to WP:RS debates. Amusingly enough my FAC started a debate over whether Jimbo Wales claim that "if an article on it can exist it can become a featured article" with my article being singled out as being argued to not be included as an exception to the rule. –– Lid 15:02, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

    deletion of Rhythm and Self-Consciousness

If I understand correctly, you are the editor who deleted Rhythm and Self-Consciousness. The person who proposed the deletion said it was advertising for a book. I proposed eliminating references to the book. The critic agreed. Yet, the site was deleted. Why? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Wmcg (talkcontribs) 19:16, 3 March 2007 (UTC).

    A last request

I was wanting your help with a last request of mine. As I have already told a lot of people, I am leaving Wiki, and I wish for the Abcomm to leave my IP unblocked / disengage the auto block, and ban my account only. I can assure everyone that I am leaving Wiki for good, and if you suspect I am back editing, you can propose anything you wish. You should know me, I am not a vandal and I dont deserve to be treated like one.
Seeing the nature of this Arbcom case, I would appreciate if you could leave a word for me. I have already requested this here and here , but I am not sure if they Arbitrators trust me. Please consider my contributions and past efforts to settle disputes. Thanks in advance --Unre4Lﺍﹸﻧﺮﮮﺍﻝ 23:50, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply. I always respected the arbitrators. But the moment I realised that nobody saw anything wrong with Bakamans comments, (comments where he compared Prophet Muhammed with Paedophilia, Hijab with Slavery, and openly said Pakistanis "enjoyed" murdering) I lost respect for them. I never thought comments like these could go unpunished.
I simply asked you a favour and you rejected. Completely understandable. You should know I tried to settle things with you on several occasions, but you failed to show good faith every time. You would pick on the smallest things and magnify them. You have attempted to ban me on several occasions and failed, but this time you were successful. Hope you are happy. --Unre4Lﺍﹸﻧﺮﮮﺍﻝ 01:05, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

    Misplaced Pages:Requests for arbitration/India-Pakistan

The above entitled arbitration case is now closed and the decision may be found at the link above. Szhaider, Unre4L, Siddiqui and Nadirali are each banned from editing Misplaced Pages for one year. For the arbitration committee, David Mestel 21:53, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

After David closed the case out formally, since he is not an adminstrator I blocked the four accounts in question. One of the editors about to be blocked indicated that he was served by a shared IP serving a large region and requested that the autoblock not be applied. Because I know nothing about South Asian IP assignments, I honored that request, but if you find evidence of sockpuppetry from the banned users, please feel free to reblock in any fashion you find appropriate. I am always sorry to see any editor have to be blocked or banned but I hope this will resolve the situation you brought to arbitration. Newyorkbrad 23:44, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

    Reality (Stephen Colbert)

Did you even read the article? Did you see that I took time and effort to make it factual, NPV and linked from Reality (disambiguation). I would really appreciate an explanation to this deletion. It was not grandiose, self-serving, or angled in any way. It was factual and relevant to a real issue the effects Misplaced Pages.

Please explain your actions to delete the article within 5 minutes of its posting and not even having the courtesy to email me regarding it.

I think you are being overly aggressive simply for the fact that it related to Stephen Colbert - which was *not* the focus of the article.

I ask again - Did you read it? --Mespinola 02:49, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

    Deletion Review - Insurgency (mod)

Insurgency (mod) official homepage is: http://www.insurgencymod.net and it is not http://mods.moddb.com/3622/insurgency as you stated in your copyright infringement notice.

The Project Leader of Insurgency Mod (Jeremy), also created the Insurgency Mod PROFILE on moddb.com, as it is a repository of all kinds of gaming mods for all the various game engines.

So, all the info on moddb.com comes from the Official Site of the Insurgency Mod, either from Jeremy, or from one of the many developers.

The Project Leader of Insurgency (Jeremy) asked for volunteers to help create a Wiki profile for Insurgency Mod. I along with a few others have volunteered, as I am on the Beta Tester Team (Rellik Remag) involved with testing Insurgency Mod.

I can't link directly to the thread, as it is in the restricted section of the forums, reserved for the Development Team & Beta Testers.

There is however, a public thread that got the ball rolling on the Insurgency Mod @ Wiki: http://forums.insmod.net/index.php?showtopic=2238&hl=Wiki

All the material text, logos, pictures, and screen-shots all came from the Official Site and was released to the Public to share with the fans, at one time or another.

The original official INS web site had pages and pages of info. But, the site is currently being re-done and is only down to a single front page and the forums. The NEW official web site will be re-launched soon.

For those of us who have created and participated in the Insurgency Wiki page, we are Wiki noobs.. so if there is anything we can do to clarify that we are indeed in compliance to the copyright rules set fourth by Wiki's rules. Please let us know what we can do further, to prove our case.

    In reference to:
This page may meet Misplaced Pages’s criteria for speedy deletion. The given reason is: This item is unquestionably a copyright infringement of http://mods.moddb.com/3622/insurgency, and no assertion of permission has been made. Wow!

    You Rock! --Jeffrey O. Gustafson - Shazaam! - <*> 10:59, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

As a long time fan of professional wrestling, I have long despaired at the sate of professional wrestling articles here on Misplaced Pages. They are often, universally, awful. Many are high traffic articles edited almost exclusively by slews of hit and run anon editors who do not have the best interests of the Project in mind. The quality of these edits is usually poor. Most of our professional wrestling articles are poor. But you have restored my faith, at least a little bit, that progress is possible. My sincere congratulations on the featuring of The Montreal Screwjob! I truly feel that professional wrestling is a serious preforming art with a rich and significant history, with dozens of historically significant internationally recognized individuals, and is just as deserving as any subject to have a featured article. Your effort is an amazing start. Keep up the great work. --Jeffrey O. Gustafson - Shazaam! - <*> 10:59, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages Weekly Podcast - interview?

Hey there Nirav, I'm a panelist on Misplaced Pages Weekly the weekly wikipedia podcast. You may have heard of us. Anyway, we're starting a new segment where we will try and interview interesting users/projects to feature some of the different aspects of WP. I was hoping we would be able to talk to you. Maybe a 5 minute piece on who you are, the indian project on WP (especially in the light of the recent meeting in Chennai) and the role of history in WP (in the light of the recent arb-com dispute). We record using Skype (so you would need that programme, a microphone and a a broadband connection to participate) and can prerecord the interview at pretty much any time that is convenient for you. Tell me what you think, Witty lama 20:02, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

I took up your advice and invited Ragib to join too. In fact, I suggested to him that you do the interview together - two heads are better than one! What do you think? Would you be able to coordinate a time which was mutually convenient? Witty lama 07:04, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
OK, great! I am free pretty much all weekend, so whatever time is convenient for you two on Friday, Saturday or Sunday (except saturday night UTC). Assuming it is ok with you two - I propose Saturday morning at 11am UTC. Please confirm. Witty lama 01:28, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
Regarding setting it up on skype, all you need is a skype account, broadband internet and a microphone. I should be able to record from my end no problems. What time is 3pm EST in UTC?? My Skype account name is "wittylama", just add me as a contact. Witty lama 01:48, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
Could we go with 10am EST, which by your calculations would be 4pm in Sweden (+1 UTC)? What's your respective Skype account names? Witty lama 02:38, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
Great, In the mean time I'll go to bed. it being 4am and all.... Talk to you soon. Witty lama 02:50, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
Ok 1500 UTC should be good. What are your skype names? Witty lama 22:02, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

CSD A7 of MTI Technology Corporation

    Hi Rama,

I noticed that you recently deleted an article that I started, MTI Technology Corporation, under CSD A7. While I did fail to include a source to meet the notability requirements of WP:CORP, I feel that these sources do exist and that it should not be difficult to add one to the article if it is restored. Would you consider undeleting it for me? For an example of some of the publicity that this company has received, check out these Google search results.

Thanks in advance. – Lantoka (talk) 09:58, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

    CSD G11 of Puritan's Pride

Hi Rama, I see that you deleted my entry for Puritan's Pride after I edited it to remove marketing style text. Can you point out specifically what content was violating the guideline? The last version of the page that I put up just stated when the company was created.

To clarify, the reason this page is being put up is because we noticed that someone made an entry for Met-Rx, one of our brands, which has a dead link to NBTY. We plan to add a page for NBTY, and for completeness sake it would make sense to add the other brands (puritan's pride and vitamin world).

My first entry for puritan was against the guidelines but I was informed of the rules by some helpful members and I thought the second entry did not violate the guidelines since it had no promotional text.

Can you let me know which item you feel violated the guidelines? that would be very helpful since I'll be making pages for other brands as well, all relating back to the original Met-Rx article (]

    Thanks PPride 19:40, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the response Rama, I'm going to read through the info you sent and go about things a bit differently next time. It appears that the article wiki needs more at this point is the one on NBTY, since that is the one with the dead link, so I'll start with that. Once that's added it will make a puritan's pride and vitamin world page more useful, since they're owned by NBTY and will therefore be mentioned on the NBTY page. All of which will relate back to the Met-Rx article which has the dead link to the NBTY page, so I think this will be helpful for everyone once it's done correctly —The preceding unsigned comment was added by PPride (talkcontribs) 21:51, 7 March 2007 (UTC).

    Chris Hecker Deletion

Why did you delete this article? I was trying to find out about him and saw it was blank and had recently been deleted. You didn't give a reason in the deletion log. PolymerMan 10:48, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

I am curious as well. You're not by chance a Wii fan? Nazlfrag 11:00, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Actually, he DID state the reason for the deletion. He's actually claiming it was appropriate for a Speedy Deletion due to Unremarkable Status with the six-letter *CSD A7* tag on the deletion log. Especially due to the timing of this 'carte blanche' decision in relation to publication of the Hecker's inflammatory remarks at the Game Developers Conference, I'm using Google Cache to re-build the previously cached page version. Regarding reverting edits of Kazi Nazrul Islam Page

    Dear Rama Arrow,

    Peace and greetings.

This is Dr. Mohammad Omar Farooq. I am a Nazrul researcher and I maintain the only comprehensive website dedicated to the life and works of Nazrul. Indeed, the resources at the site were extensively used and referred to in putting together the Misplaced Pages article on Nazrul. My own writings on Nazrul have also been included in the reference section of the essay.

Recently, while going through the Misplaced Pages article, I came across a particular information that is uncorroborated. Indeed, the particular reference given is not even accessible. Based on three leading biographies of Nazrul and additional research (that does not contradict the information provided in these biographies), I edited the part related to Nazrul's illness and treatment and added specific, corroborated information (including about the physicians who examined Nazrul and their diagnosis). It seems all my edits have been reverted by you.

Since you have contributed so much to this page, obviously you have interest in this article. I am wondering if you can help me understand your reason to revert it. After all, if you care about Nazrul, I am sure you will like to have accurate information about him. Furthermore, as a Misplaced Pages contributor, we all must have interest in improving the pedia through better research and works.

I would greatly appreciate if you can help me understand your decision to revert my edits.

I can also be directly contacted at farooqm@globalwebpost.com.

    Best regards.

    Re: Kazi Nazrul Islam

    Dear Rama Arrow,

    Peace and greetings.

Thank you so much for your prompt feedback and clarification. I am not that experienced with Misplaced Pages. Maybe you can help me understand a few general things and then address a specific matters about the Nazrul article.

    1. "I had no intention to un-do your edits."

Is a featured article a specially protected one and/or under special control or supervision of any specific individual. Also, who can "revert" an edit?

    2. "The only problem with a few of your edits is that when you add fresh information, you must provide citations with reliable sources."

Can you help me understand how to add/edit citations? When I try to edit Notes by clicking on Edit (on the right side of Notes), I don't find where the existing notes are.

    3. "Also, a few of your sentences (for example, your sentence about Nazrul's criticism of Islam) had several weasel words. These policies apply for all articles, so please be careful."

Each of words that I have used very carefully reflect accuracy about Nazrul, which is documented at Nazrul site. I can provide specific citations based on Nazrul's own works. I need help with how to edit part.

Thanks for your clarification and welcoming me as a partner in this effort.

    Keep up the good work.

    Please restore Paige typesetting machine

You deleted Paige typesetting machine as a copyvio. In this case, I believe the article was not a copyvio. I think the copyright on the article expired a long time ago, so that the article (like the 1911 Encyclopedia Brittanica) is now in the public domain, and the typesetting machine itself is a notable piece of printing history. I didn't contribute to the article, but I would encourage you to restore it. --Eastmain 04:04, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

You speedy deleted this article today on the basis of Syberwolff's tagging of the article as patent nonsense. You deleted the article, but I recreated it as it was before with a little wikification (I was removing the tag and left the window open and saved the edit after you deleted it) because the CSD reason was incorrect. Syberwolff has recently been tagging a lot of articles for deletion (most of them incorrectly), and the article was not patent nonsense, rather having a legitimate explanation of the name and its use in Nigeria among the Yoruba. The article, if it is to be deleted, should go through the proper articles for deletion channel and should not be a speedy delete. — ዮም | (Yom) | TalkcontribsEthiopia 08:57, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

    Michael Jordan

Could you do me a huge favor and re-read the article, I've made a laborious effort to address the concerns, also please do me an even more huger favor and go into the process with an open mind. Even though I didn't think it was biased before I've made a concerted effort to change it to more acceptbale version. Thanks in advance. Quadzilla99 18:40, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

I've done some tweaking, all to the legacy section, and I've responded to you in FAC. Have a look. Quadzilla99 06:21, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
Also edited the Jerry West sentence in the player profile section, removed West's statement that he considered him the best defensive player in the league, just stated that West was impressed with his defense or something thereabouts. Quadzilla99 09:23, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
I responded to you in the FAC and made some changes. The changes are in the Wizards section and the after retiring as a player section. Take your time in responding no rush. Quadzilla99 18:34, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

    Intervol

Hi there, I was wondering under what grounds the article 'Intervol' was deleted by you? It may not have had references as yet but it is a constitution certified member of one of the largest and most well-respected universities in England. The page is useful as it gives readers of the main university of birmingham page more information if they want it. Please could I have a copy of the page so that I can correctly reference it and then re-include it. I would have much preferred some constructive criticism and help rather than a quiet removal. Is your role to simply remove the unreferenced material again and again or to teach people how to correctly assemble pages?
    Thank you for your time.
