About this page

Use this page to request the committee open an arbitration case. To be accepted, an arbitration request needs 4 net votes to "accept" (or a majority).

Arbitration is a last resort. WP:DR lists the other, escalating processes that should be used before arbitration. The committee will decline premature requests.

Requests may be referred to as "case requests" or "RFARs"; once opened, they become "cases". Before requesting arbitration, read the arbitration guide to case requests. Then click the button below. Complete the instructions quickly; requests incomplete for over an hour may be removed. Consider preparing the request in your userspace.

To request enforcement of an existing arbitration ruling, see Misplaced Pages:Arbitration/Requests/Enforcement. To clarify or change an existing arbitration ruling, see Misplaced Pages:Arbitration/Requests/Clarification and Amendment.

Guidance on participation and word limits

Unlike many venues on Misplaced Pages, ArbCom imposes word limits. Please observe the below notes on complying with word limits.

  • Motivation. Word limits are imposed to promote clarity and focus on the issues at hand and to ensure that arbitrators are able to fully take in submissions. Arbitrators must read a large volume of information across many matters in the course of their service on the Committee, so submissions that exceed word limits may be disregarded. For the sake of fairness and to discourage gamesmanship (i.e., to disincentivize "asking forgiveness rather than permission"), word limits are actively enforced.
  • In general. Most submissions to the Arbitration Committee (including statements in arbitration case requests and ARCAs and evidence submissions in arbitration cases) are limited to 500 words, plus 50 diffs. During the evidence phase of an accepted case, named parties are granted an automatic extension to 1000 words plus 100 diffs.
  • Sectioned discussion. To facilitate review by arbitrators, you should edit only in your own section. Address your submission to arbitrators, not to other participants. If you wish to rebut, clarify, or otherwise refer to another submission for the benefit of arbitrators, you may do so within your own section. (More information.)
  • Requesting an extension. You may request a word limit extension in your submission itself (using the {{@ArbComClerks}} template) or by emailing clerks-l@lists.wikimedia.org. In your request, you should briefly (in 1-2 sentences) include (a) why you need additional words and (b) a broad outline of what you hope to discuss in your extended submission. The Committee endeavors to act upon extension requests promptly and aims to offer flexibility where warranted.
    • Members of the Committee may also grant extensions when they ask direct questions to facilitate answers to those questions.
  • Refactoring statements. You should write carefully and concisely from the start. It is impermissible to rewrite a statement to shorten it after a significant amount of time has passed or after anyone has responded to it (see Misplaced Pages:Talk page guidelines § Editing own comments), so it is often advisable to submit a brief initial statement to leave room to respond to other users if the need arises.
  • Sign submissions. In order for arbitrators and other participants to understand the order of submissions, sign your submission and each addition (using ~~~~).
  • Word limit violations. Submissions that exceed the word limit will generally be "hatted" (collapsed), and arbitrators may opt not to consider them.
  • Counting words. Words are counted on the rendered text (not wikitext) of the statement (i.e., the number of words that you would see by copy-pasting the page section containing your statement into a text editor or word count tool). This internal gadget may also be helpful.
  • Sanctions. Please note that members and clerks of the Committee may impose appropriate sanctions when necessary to promote the effective functioning of the arbitration process.

General guidance

  • This page is for statements, not discussion.
  • Arbitrators or clerks may refactor or delete statements, e.g. off-topic or unproductive remarks, without warning.
  • Banned users may request arbitration via the committee contact page; don't try to edit this page.
  • Under no circumstances should you remove requests from this page, or open a case (even for accepted requests), unless you are an arbitrator or clerk.
  • After a request is filed, the arbitrators will vote on accepting or declining the case. The <0/0/0> tally counts the arbitrators voting accept/decline/recuse.
  • Declined case requests are logged at Misplaced Pages:Arbitration/Index/Declined requests. Accepted case requests are opened as cases, and logged at Misplaced Pages:Arbitration/Index/Cases once closed.

Hi there, I am compelled to write this statement as I feel I have been bullied by other editors, I put together an investigation into iloveapphysics as I had removed a suspension on an account, for some reason it bothered me as they reverted it so I looked into them and felt I had discovered some edit wars and this editor appeared to defame others ( not sure if that the right terminology but that's what I used). I noticed they wrote negative stuff about politicians and high fliers ie adding the family were criminals on the ac which I felt was irrelevant and unfair. I mentioned these other victims as I called them alongside my edit adam leitman bailey, I just thought it warranted an investigation.... anyway I do have fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue so becoming an editor was a lifesaver as I can do it in my own time. My illness, faith and authenticity all appear to been met with rather aggressive comments and a threat to be blocked. i don't understand why other editors have to be so rude and hurtful and accusatory - I believe I have been called a sockpuppet, inept, a liar, and other nasty comments in their replies. The thing is I live in the UK please feel free to do a check, I am a 57-year-old email living with those conditions which I can prove. I now feel as though I don't have freedom of speech and feel I've been bullied into submission. I have no connection with any of the victims I just thought I was doing a good thing. I originally wrote to the noticeboard/incidents group and ask them to look into the ac of illoveapphysics but everyone seems to think I am fake, maybe my reasons for removing the suspension and trying to get justice for the victims were wrong, emotional etc but I don't think I serve to be spoken to like that and accused of being this, that or the other. I don't wish to lose my ac as it keeps me busy but I feel I have no choice but to contact you on here as I have no support whatsoever and feel upset by these reactions. I may have made mistakes and used wrong terminology, I have been building my confidence since I started but I shall never attempt anything like this again as this has destroyed my confidence.

I hate to get involved in this kind of drama, but from my point of view, all I did was revert the removal of the mention of the subject’s suspension from practicing law on the page Adam Leitman Bailey. Since that section had previously been deleted by a user who was subsequently banned for sockpuppetry, I thought it was worth asking the question in the edit summary of whether this was another case of sockpuppetry. That is all I did. I don’t know why my other editing activities are being brought into question or why I am being accused of defamation or having a vendetta or even being paid to edit Misplaced Pages. Those accusations that were made against me were totally unfounded and inappropriate. If anyone has any substantive feedback about my editing on the Adam Leitman Bailey page or others, I promise to take it into account, but the ANI brought against me for reverting the removal of the suspension section is not accurate. Hi SilkTork- our comments seem to have crossed each other. I appreciate the feedback and will keep it in mind for the future. Iloveapphysics (talk) 18:19, 30 May 2023 (UTC) Moving reply to SilkTork's comment below. Nythar (💬-🍀) 18:22, 30 May 2023 (UTC)

iloveapphysics (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) is also a party to this and has not been listed.

A brief review of this shows that Bijou1995 has lacked tact, couth and composure throughout this incident and it is not surprising she has run into trouble with admins. As far as this is not due to disability, I would admonish Bijou1995 to take a step back and consider how she is approaching conflict on Misplaced Pages, and to voluntarily withdraw this action lest there be unwanted consequences. Bishonen and bradv are respected admins and have handled this thoughtfully and patiently. In the future if Bijou1995 wants to paint a picture of misbehavior on the part of another editor (as iloveapphysics), any accusation or insinuation should be closely tied to diffs which clearly show the reason the accusation is being levied. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DIYeditor (talkcontribs) 17:13, 30 May 2023 (UTC)

Replying to GeneralNotability and Floquenbeam, I guess I fit the description of making useless and obvious observations? I wasn't sure of the most appropriate place to tell her she ought to delete this herself. If it can be summarily removed out of courtesy to all involved that's even better. —DIYeditor (talk) 17:43, 30 May 2023 (UTC)

Statement by Dave

Okay 2 things; A) What has your disability got to do with any of this ?
B) When 3 admins tell you repeatedly here, here, here and here you're doing something wrong Why would you come here instead of listening to them and adjusting your behaviour accordingly. You're the only problem here and unless you want to be blocked for being a tool you might want to remove this and listen to what others are telling you. –Davey2010 17:28, 30 May 2023 (UTC)

Statement by Floquenbeam

I suppose you could just remove this case request (or ask a clerk to) before the community sees the red cape waving? It's asking a lot to have an !!!!OPEN CASE REQUEST!!!! and expect everyone to resist the temptation. Floquenbeam (talk) 17:32, 30 May 2023 (UTC)

ugh, I've forgotten everything I ever knew. @GeneralNotability:, this was a response to your comment. thanks Izno for moving it. lucky i wasn't blocked.... Floquenbeam (talk) 17:37, 30 May 2023 (UTC)

Statement by Robert McClenon

User:Bijou1995 - Most of the comments that I would have made have already been made. I will repeat that the rule against personal attacks is taken seriously, and your statements about iloveapphysics were personal attacks. I have an item of advice that other editors have not made. Be civil and concise, and read too long, didn't read. Your report at WP:ANI is 3500 words, and is largely incomprehensible. It isn't civil. It isn't concise. Because of its length, it was hard for me to find the personal attack, but I did find it, so that your ANI post was both much too long, and much too uncivil. Also, if you are in pain, whether from fibromyalgia, or any other condition, it may be advisable to do something other than edit Misplaced Pages, and it may especially be a good idea not to post anything very publicly to be viewed by many editors. • I would like to preemptively thank the members of the community who will show up here and make a blatantly obvious comment on the merits of the case just for the sake of making a comment, apparently unaware that arbs are generally capable of drawing obvious conclusions too. GeneralNotability (talk) 17:16, 30 May 2023 (UTC)
DIYeditor, it wasn't directed at you specifically (I hadn't even seen your comment when I posted this). Just speaking from experience at other ARCs. GeneralNotability (talk) 17:45, 30 May 2023 (UTC)
  • Decline, and sooner rather than later. This is not a matter for ArbCom. Minor disagreements about editorial content are common, and are best sorted by discussion on the article talkpage (that is what it is there for). If users are unable to reach agreement between themselves they can ask for a Third opinion, or bring in other users to the discussion by approaching WikiProjects (relevant Wikiprojects are listed on the talkpage of articles - Talk:Adam Leitman Bailey shows there are four WikiProjects with an interest in the article) or opening a Request for comment. Other methods of resolving a dispute are given on Misplaced Pages:Dispute resolution. One of the simplest approaches to an editing problem is to simply ask the other person why they have done something. A little old fashioned courtesy and polite discussion goes a long way in most environments and societies, including Misplaced Pages. As does ignoring minor negative remarks. The usual British way when someone shoves you in a queue is to say "sorry" - that kinda works. Having said that, while I understand the rationale and frustration behind Iloveapphysics's edit summary, it was unnecessary and inappropriate. If you suspect that someone is a sockpuppet, then open a report rather than drop insults. SilkTork (talk) 18:14, 30 May 2023 (UTC)
