Born in Glasgow, the youngest of three children, he spent the first few years of his life in Toronto before returning to Paisley, Scotland after his father left the family. He studied law at Glasgow University, where he served as President of the school's Law Society, and worked as a solicitor after graduation, but decided to quit his job in order to study acting. He spent the majority of his time as a lawyer feeling depressed and drinking, but he sobered up after he started acting and has not touched a drop of alcohol for over 8 years. Luckily, he already knew a bit about singing before signing on for the title role in Joel Schumacher's film rendition of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera. While in school, he sang with a rock band called Speed. But he began taking formal singing lessons before he was even cast as the Phantom, training for hours a day from January of 2003 to June of 2004. He prefers to be called "Gerry" rather than "Gerard."
Among Butler's film credits are Mrs. Brown, Dracula 2000, Lara Croft Tomb Raider 2: The Cradle of Life, Timeline, and The Phantom of the Opera, in which he sings the title role. Upcoming roles include Dear Frankie (released in the UK) and Beowulf & Grendel.
He resides primarily in London, although he recently purchased a loft apartment in New York City.
