Ampersand

The ampersand (&) substitutes for the word and. In normal text, and should be used instead: January 1 and 2, not January 1 & 2. Retain ampersands in titles of works or organizations, such as The Tom & Jerry Show or AT&T. Ampersands may be used with consistency and discretion in tables, infoboxes, and similar contexts where space is limited.

Hi Ohconfucius, thank you for your contribution to this article. Can you please let me know if there is an issue of having Netherlands flag on this article? Dineee90 (talk) 22:10, 17 July 2022 (UTC)

dashes.js is suddenly broken

Something you changed in the last couple days may have broken the dashes.js script. I minus sign no longer appears at the page top... just "auto ed." There talk about it at User talk:Ohconfucius/dashes.js. Thanks. Fyunck(click) (talk) 07:15, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

I'm seeing the same thing... use this amazing script all the time! Hope it can be fixed. —Joeyconnick (talk) 22:00, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
Now fixed. Many thanks to User:William Avery for the workaround proposed. -- Ohc  11:26, 20 August 2022 (UTC)
Still broken for me using Chrome. Microsoft Edge is also broken. Used shift-reload to reset the cache and it didn't work. No "-" at the page top, only "an auto ed" that brings up "AutoEd/core.js: autoEdFunctions is undefined". Fyunck(click) (talk) 20:29, 20 August 2022 (UTC)
The fix I applied was to User:Ohconfucius/dashes.js and not to the original script, which you have loaded. You need to ensure that my updated version is being imported in your common file. -- Ohc  22:10, 20 August 2022 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages screenshot licensing

Hello! I see that you uploaded File:Update screenshot for activating MOSNUM dates.png to Misplaced Pages. However, the GFDL has been phased out for new uploads on enwiki. To clarify the license of the image, would you be able to add {{Misplaced Pages-screenshot}} to the file description page? Thanks! HouseBlaster 21:20, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

MOSNUM Script

Hi. Thanks for the script! Are changes like ] to 1979, and ] to 1974, from Special:Diff/1112468928 an intended effect of the script? There are loads of these types of link in snooker articles. Regards, BennyOnTheLoose (talk) 08:40, 28 September 2022 (UTC)

Script exception

Hi. Could you add an exception to the dash script so it wont break the {{Israel populations|Tel Aviv - Yafo}} template? Thanks. –Daveout(talk) 23:53, 28 September 2022 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of File:Snoopy mural.jpg

Notice

The file File:Snoopy mural.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No Freedom of panorama in France. Underlying artwork would be still copyrighted

While all constructive contributions to Misplaced Pages are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Where should I ask for help on using MOSNUM_dates script?

Hello,

I've come across the use of the script User:Ohconfucius/script/MOSNUM_dates

I'd appreciate a pointer as to where I can ask for help in using the script bearing in mind that I've no idea how to use scripts to edit Misplaced Pages - I have had a look at the MOSNUM_dates page and just run into a brick wall (there are too many terms used of which I have negligible or less understanding).

In particular, I'd like to learn how to use the script to force the use of yyyy-mm-dd in access and archive dates in article citations (in line with Misplaced Pages:Manual of Style/Dates and numbers#Consistency).

(I did read that "Users are invited to manually add |cs1-dates= parameter to {{Use dmy dates}} or {{Use mdy dates}} causing applicable dates to be rendered in 2024-12-27 YMD format" but I can't work out what that means.)

Thank you.

Issue with dashes script

Hi Ohconfucius! This edit to Vicenza (made by Kj cheetham) broke the comment in the reference, so I have reverted it. Could you please tweak the script to avoid this in the future? Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 19:13, 28 January 2023 (UTC)

American English script false positive

Hi! It's been a while. Are you still maintaining the ENGVAR conversion scripts? I just got a false positive with the name Schelling when converting to American English. Test it on Schelling's model of segregation. Cheers, MClay1 (talk) 13:08, 5 April 2023 (UTC)

CS1 error on Geoffrey Hinton

Hello, I'm Qwerfjkl (bot). I have automatically detected that this edit performed by you, on the page Geoffrey Hinton, may have introduced referencing errors. They are as follows:

  • A "bare URL and missing title" error. References show this error when they do not have a title. Please edit the article to add the appropriate title parameter to the reference. (Fix | Ask for help)

Please check this page and fix the errors highlighted. If you think this is a false positive, you can report it to my operator. Thanks, Qwerfjkl (bot) (talk) 11:08, 8 May 2023 (UTC)

Updates to an info box on the PCCW page

Hi Ohconfucius. I disclosed a conflict of interest and proposed an infobox for the Lenovo PCCW Solutions sub-section of the PCCW page. You can see my requests here. I saw that you were one of the largest contributors to the page and was hoping you might be willing to take a look at my request. Let me know. Best regards. Flag script

Hi! I've been trying to get rid of the flag overload in this page, and thought the FLAG –> COUNTRY option would do that for me. But it doesn't – am I doing it wrong, or is there a glitch with the script? Or is the page perhaps too large? Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 09:33, 30 July 2023 (UTC)

@Justlettersandnumbers: I had the same problem. See User talk:Ohconfucius/script#Is the flagcruft script working?. – Pbrks  21:06, 11 October 2023 (UTC)

Sentence spacing

Hi -- would you be willing to disable the part of your general formatting script that turns two spaces between sentences into a single space? I've had to revert this several times on various articles when other editors have edited articles I'm the primary editor for, and then re-add the other useful parts of the edit. It's a cosmetic edit that has no effect on the displayed article, and it's something that is always intentional on the part of the editor who wrote the article -- who is usually the person who's going to go on and do further work on it. I know this has come up before, and I don't know if you have a reason for not removing this functionality, or just haven't got around to it, but I would really appreciate it if you could cut this. Thanks. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 02:12, 14 August 2023 (UTC)

Just reverted another of these: this edit appears to have been done with your script. Would you please remove this functionality? Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 16:47, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
Just saw that you fixed this. Thank you! I really appreciate it and I know there are others who feel the same way. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 21:00, 22 August 2023 (UTC)
You're very welcome. Happy editing! Regards, -- Ohc  19:13, 24 August 2023 (UTC)

MOSNUM and MOS:ORDER

(continued from User Talk:GiantSnowman) I'll see if I can suggest something but as I said my plate is full for the next couple of weeks. If we just pay attention to Short Description I think that would handle the majority of the cases; templates in the {{For}} class may be harder. David Brooks (talk) 14:06, 15 September 2023 (UTC)

I just remembered this offer, and it was actually ridiculously easy to fix. The necessary tweak was already coded, on line 845 in Step 3. So at User:DavidBrooks/script/MOSNUM dates.js, I inserted a new line 835 (removing the semicolon on line 834). @GiantSnowman:, do you want to try loading my version instead to see if it works for you? David Brooks (talk) 05:28, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
First, I apologize for the implied criticism in "ridiculously easy". I feel like I spent most of my career poking at the dusty corners of other peoples' code. Second, I'll dig around the script API to see if I can place the Use... templates in the right place according to MOS:ORDER, but don't hold your breath. David Brooks (talk) 15:37, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
How does one add the code again please? I'm not that tech savvy... GiantSnowman 18:23, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
@GiantSnowman: Edit User:GiantSnowman/common.js, and on line 6 replace User:Ohconfucius with User:DavidBrooks. Follow the "bypass your browser's cache" instructions. If it looks good and Ohconfucius adopts the tweak, undo that edit because I'll probably be playing with my copy. David Brooks (talk) 23:44, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
Oh, and I discovered while implementing this quick fix: the code to put the SD first is executed when the script finds a "Use..." template already in place. In other words, even with the official version, clicking the "DATES to..." link twice will do the trick. And a Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate this and are checking WP today! David Brooks (talk) 16:37, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, I have done that - as a semi-Canadian I celebrated a few weeks ago... GiantSnowman 15:21, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
The new script does not work in a situation where {{good article}} is present, see this which I have now manually corrected. GiantSnowman 15:28, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
It was only intended as a quick fix for when the Use... template is prepended to a Short Description that was previously on the first line, which I think was the source of most of the complaints. In the cited case, the SD was previously on line 2 (the fix would have exhibited the same behavior with any hatnote or other text that appeared before the SD). I'm thinking through a more complex fix that would place the Use... template in the "right" order, but my JS coding has corroded so it'll take time. David Brooks (talk) 16:27, 24 November 2023 (UTC)

Heads-up: in a few hours I'll upload an update to my version (I didn't want to spring it without warning). It will try to put any new Use... template towards the end of the head templates, where it belongs; its analysis is pragmatic without semantic analysis (that's a job for AWB) but seems mostly right. As a bonus, it will move Short Description to the top if possible. There is a potential edge case where it might break syntax, but I've never seen it in practice. There is a possibility of a full-line comment put in the wrong place, which I could probably fix. Otherwise, once I upload it, Ohconfucius and GiantSnowman, and anyone else who's listening, please let me know of any problems. David Brooks (talk) 15:43, 28 November 2023 (UTC)

Will do - thanks for all your work on this. GiantSnowman 18:56, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
Yes, many thanks indeed. I've now copied it over to my production and test scripts. Simple though the change may have been, it would have taken me a month of Sundays . Regards,
Sorry to mislead; when I said "in a few hours" I didn't expect visitors who have just left :-). I've uploaded the version I described just now; it is significantly different from the version you have. @GiantSnowman: can you give it a try? David Brooks (talk) 00:35, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
Because of focusing on Use..., I only just noticed that script-assisted EngVarB additions also put it on the first line. Not sure when I'll have time to look at that, but the "proper" fix would likely be to factor out the new code and add it to your utils. David Brooks (talk) 16:57, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
Do I need additional code in my common.js? GiantSnowman 17:41, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
@GiantSnowman: No, but it won't do any harm to purge it as before. David Brooks (talk) 17:54, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
I just noticed/realized that the existing code will be thrown off by a {{Multiple Issues}} box near the top. No great harm, but the Use... template will appear on the line before that box, probably violating MOS:ORDER. I'll look into a safe fix, although I recognize this is going far beyond the original charge to only worry about Short Description. David Brooks (talk) 01:44, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
Error located at here - where it doesn't add the tag. GiantSnowman 19:35, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
@GiantSnowman: Thanks. I had made a last-minute change that resulted in it not working when there were no template calls before the text body started; my bad. Fixed (purge again). David Brooks (talk) 21:17, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
Grand, thanks. GiantSnowman 21:53, 1 December 2023 (UTC)

New message from Aaron Liu

Hello, Ohconfucius. You have new messages at User talk:Ohconfucius/dashes.js.
Message added 23:34, 18 September 2023 (UTC). You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

Aaron Liu (talk) 23:34, 18 September 2023 (UTC)

Please add Use British English to articles instead of EngvarB

EngvarB is only supposed to be used when an article's English variant cannot be identified but clearly does not use American or Canadian English. It's in the documentation. IPs are people too 🇺🇸🦅 20:16, 10 October 2023 (UTC)
