King Abdulaziz University (in Arabic جامعة الملك عبد العزيز) was founded in 1967, and had 2,000 teachers and more than 37,000 students in 2000/2001.
Established initially as a private university, King Abdulaziz University was converted to a state university in 1971.
It has the following Faculties:
Production Engineering and Mechanical Systems Design
Thermal Engineering and Desalination Technology
Faculty of Medicine
The Faculty of Medicine was established in 1975. And later on 1977, University Hospital was established to provide teaching facilities for both medical and nursing students.
Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences
Established in 2003. This faculty is now one of the four major Health Faculties in the campus of the Medical Center of KAU .

Faculty of Earth Sciences
The Faculty occupies two modern and well-equipped two-story buildings within the premises of KAU. In 1970 ,the Ministry of Petroleum established the Center of Applied Geology for training graduate geologists in geological mapping and mineral exploration. The training program of the Center was later expanded to include hydrogeology and engineering geology. In 1975 , the Center was attached to the KAU as the Institute of Applied Geology. The Faculty of Earth Sciences in its current embodiment is the result of amalgamation of the Institute of Applied Geology and the Geology Department of the Faculty of Sciences of the KAU in 1978.
