It returned 8 Teachtaí Dála (TDs) to the Dáil, using the using the Single Transferable Vote method of proportional representation (PR-STV).
The constituency was created and only ever used at the 1922 general election to elect the Members of the 3rd Dáil. It succeeded a combined set of Kerry and Limerick UK Parliament constituencies such as Kerry South which were used to elect the Members of the 1st Dáil and Members of the 2nd Dáil.
It was abolished under the Electoral Act 1923 and succeeded by the new Kerry constituency and the Limerick constituency, both of which were first used in the Irish general election, 1923 for the Members of the 4th Dáil.
