Xie Jinyuan's posthumous rank

You revert my edit on his rank of being a lieutenant general instead of a brigadier general. The reason I edited it was that I was reading the Defense of Sihang Warehouse article and it stated him as a lieutenant general and I was not able to find any conclusive information supporting either, yet the defense article was a featured article. So I took the assumption that it was correct, so I'm curious on which is correct? -Davis Lee 02:46, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

Re: I tried finding the Happy Happy Man...

Last time I went to Chinatown about a month and a half ago (on a Saturday) he was at the intersection of Grant and Washington. I believe that is the same location at which User:Allentchang took the photo that is on my userpage. I don't go to Chinatown often enough to be able to trace his movements, so I'm not sure if he hangs out at other places, but he's not always there. On some weekdays, he hangs out at Berkeley, at the edge of the UC campus between Sproul Plaza and Telegraph Avenue. He was there almost everyday at the beginning of September, but I haven't seen him since. So who knows? --Jiang 06:47, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

Probably because that guy pushed him off his podium and stepped on his sign, eh? He also sometimes hangs out at Stanford. The Daily Cal had an interesting article about him. --Xiaopo (Talk) 20:00, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
No, I saw him a few times after that incident (including the last time at Chinatown)...holding the same "Israel = Terrorist No. 1" sign.--Jiang 22:46, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
Someone pushed him and stepped on his signs??!! *shocked* Who could be so cruel! :p -- Миборовский 00:14, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

Hey mib can you lock the sihang article or something? It's been vandalized and Raul apparently doesn't like to do the logical thing and protect the FA on the mainpage. BlueShirts 20:22, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

Well it's off the mainpage now so there shouldn't be any vandalism after this. -- Миборовский 00:10, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

November Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Misplaced Pages policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Misplaced Pages because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Misplaced Pages easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Misplaced Pages. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
The last AC meeting (full log)
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Misplaced Pages.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Misplaced Pages policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Misplaced Pages is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.
Signed...

Falun Gong mediation

Hello, I'm sorry it's been awhile, but I recently agreed to mediate that case. I don't know if it's a stale issue, so it would be good if a few of you let me know whether or not mediation is still needed. Since there are so many of you, I'm going to assume that all of you agree to me mediating until and unless I am told otherwise. I'm also going to assume public mediation is fine, unless someone asks for private mediation, or I come to think private mediation might be better. I would, however, appreciate it if you just said something there to let me know if you are still around. Also, assuming you are still interested in mediation, please watchlist the page if you haven't already. Thanks! Armedblowfish (talk|mail) 02:57, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Could you help

Tomananda is unfairly blocked. He exhausted his 3 reverts on this page but he did not violate the 3RR rule. I contacted the admin that blocked him the following is his response. What is more unfair is that Olaf Stephanos who had just as many reverts on that page was not blocked. Could you help unblock Tomananda?

3RR is not an entitlement to 3 reverts. Edit warring is prohibited. Also, the threshhold for information on Misplaced Pages is not truth, but verifiability; Misplaced Pages is not the place to reveal "the truth" except through reliable sources. Please also read Misplaced Pages:Resolving disputes. —Centrxtalk • 07:26, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

He was blocked at about 6pm yesterday, but as of 10:50 pm today he is still blocked. Could you unblock him? --Yueyuen 06:51, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
He doesn't show up in the active block list. If he still can't edit, there's nothing I can do. He'll probably have to take it to someone with more system privileges. -- Миборовский 07:00, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

Chinese inventing the crossbow

Hi Mibo

Somehow pro-Chinese editors have a tendency to insert unsourced material about the invention of the crossbow in China or create a pseudocitation from Needhams comment about South-East Asia.(Seems very hard that something possibly wasn't invented in China) On the other hand nobody seems to care at all what exactly was invented or done in China as long as the article says done first in China. Could you help us perhaps to sort out what the Chinese evidence for the early appearance of crossbows is and much more important how did these systems work 8bornze triggers?, bone triggers? arrow poison? bamboo bows?). The multiple prod crossbow is for example one of the greatest inventions on the crossbow, but none cares about it, only first, first, first. Greatings Wandalstouring 19:29, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Order of Sublime Commencement.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Order of Sublime Commencement.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Misplaced Pages under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Misplaced Pages. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Misplaced Pages page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. 'free edits'

Hi Mibo,

I have been thinking about possibilities of helping users in countries where only proxies are possible to contribute to wikipedia: Misplaced Pages talk:No open proxies

My idea is to create a possibility (like a talk page), perhaps not as part of wikipedia, where you can edit using a proxy (with edit restrictions to make it difficult for vandals, for example need login and it takes some time until you are switched free to edit) and this information can be used to improve wikipedia (information needs verifiable sources, etc.). It would be a good thing if we could link specific information directly to the talk pages of respective articles and vice versa, possibly via a wikiproject against censorship or the like (It would only be a bibliography help, nothing today's projects don't do). I thought about you, because I lack the resources for realizing the plan and you might have better connections or ideas. Wandalstouring 11:51, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

  • Two new templates have been introduced:
  • An effort is being made to have task forces maintain annotated bibliographies for their topic areas; several task forces have already begun to construct them.
  • The project reached two important milestones this month: 500 active members and 30,000 articles in the assessment system.
  • A military version of Wikipe-tan has been created; a new userbox featuring one of the images is available for interested project members.

Chinese -> English

Hi. I was wondering if you could translate two Chinese sentenses. One you can find at IMPawards, it's the tag line from Hostel (film). The other one is a title for a Icelandic/Hong Kong movie called Maður eins og ég. Actualy I know it's "Man like me, woman like you" in chinese, but could you write the title first in Chinese caracters and then again the pronouncation. I tried myself here but I'm sure it has some mistakes. Yea, with the tag line the same three things, translation, english pronouncation and Chinese caracters. Hope you can help. Thanks --Steinninn 03:25, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

That is the funnyest thing I have heard in a long time. I love Eli Roth, so personaly I woun't submite the translation :) But about the movie title. Since imdb dose not support japanese caracters I wanted to submite it with english alphabet. It has already been done with a number of titles, like Ying xiong for Hero. Are there any rules how to change the caracters into alphabet? Would Wo jer yang de nan ren, ni jer yang de nü ren be correct? Maybe it's complicated? Again, I think the hostel poster is so funny, and thanks for the quick reply. --Steinninn 06:06, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
Alright, that's awsome. But if you look at the movie title and what you wrote, you can see that everything looks exactly the same, exept the "zhe". The upper one is missing one short line on the top left corner. Maybe not a big deal. But the lower one is completely different. The original one was 那 and looks very similar. Wich one is the correct one? And do I nead to find a nother one with two small lines for the upper zhe? Again, thanks for the help. --Steinninn 15:38, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
Oh, alright, I kind of thought so. One more question, and I think it's going to be the last one. Are these bouth Mandarin, or or maybe Cantonese. Maybe one of them is Cantonese and the other is Mandarin. Again, I'm not familiar with Chinese, so I'm not even sure if you can see the differences simply with the caracteres? --Steinninn 01:08, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Ranks of the People's Liberation Army

Hi. There's a dispute currently happening on this page. A user added in rank information about two supposed older ranks, the PLA's Marshall and Grand Marshal equivalents. An admin is convinced that the person adding is a sockpuppet and had him banned and reverted. From seeing the edits, and from seeing a source the admin provided, the edits seem legitimate, but I'm not very familiar with the PLA, myself. Since you're in the History wikiproject, you might know a bit more about it and be in a position to comment and hopefully help settle the dispute. --Yuje 11:58, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
