This list is alphabetized by chronological order. Some names that lived during the turn of a century appear twice.
Before The Islamic Invasion
- Zarathustra (زرتشت), Iranian prophet and author of the Avestan Gathas (probably 1200 BC)
- Mani (مانی), Persian religious leader and founder of Manichaeism (approximately 210-276 A.D.)
- An Shihkao, a Parthian translator.
Most of the ancient Persian literature was lost during the Islamic conquest of Persia.
From the Islamic Invasion to the 8th century
Morteza Motahhari lists the name of dozens of Iranians who contributed to Arabic, Persian, or Pahlavi literature during the Umayyid occupation period of Iran. Although not particularly famous for Persian literature, nevertheless some of the more notable names are:
