Should opening paragraph mention that he is a convicted criminal?

His convictions are mentioned in the lead. I don't think "convicted criminal" should be added to the initial sentence, if that is what you are suggesting. We sometimes include that for felons whose felonies are relevant to their notability, but for someone convicted of misdemeanors it seems a bit sensationalist.
