Today, the British Isles contains two sovereign states , the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom , and three dependencies , Guernsey , Jersey and the Isle of Man . Within the United Kingdom there are two further kingdoms , England and Scotland , a principality , Wales , and a province , Northern Ireland . The British monarch as head of state of all the people of the islands. since the Union of the Crowns in 1603 and the 1949 Republic of Ireland Act . Partly because of this, many contemporary historians avoid the term British Isles due to the complexity of relations between the peoples of the archipelago .
