On 8 June 2024 the IDF and the Yamam killed 210 Palestinians, including children, and injured over 400 in a joint operation on the Nuseirat refugee camp. Four Israeli hostages held by Hamas at Nuseirat were rescued in the operation. One of the rescued hostages was Noa Argamani. The Gaza Health Ministry did not say how many of the casualties were combatants. Al-Aqsa Hospital was overwhelmed with casualties, while communications were disrupted by intense Israeli bombing.

The massacre came two days after an Israeli airstrike in the Nuseirat refugee camp hit the UNRWA-run al-Sardi school that was sheltering displaced Palestinian refugees, killing more than 30 people, including 23 women and children.
