Gujrat Division (Urdu, Template:Lang-pa) is a proposed administrative division of the Punjab province of Pakistan. Gujrat city is proposed as the headquarters. By June 2024, the division still hasn't formed due to budget constraints.
History
It was first proposed on 17 August 2022 after districts Gujrat, Mandi Bahauddin, and Hafizabad of the previously Gujranwala Division were proposed to put together in a separate division. The newly created Wazirabad District on 14 October 2022 was also proposed to add under Gujrat Division making it a total of four districts.
However, on 15 February 2023 the Punjab caretaker government suspended the notifications of the newly established division of Gujrat, newly created Wazirabad District and three new tehsils Jalalpur Jattan and Kunjah in Gujrat District and Alipur Chattha in the Wazirabad district were suspended according to the new notification issued by the Board of Revenue. According to the new notification, the suspension was valid till the general election in Punjab. On 21 February 2023, the Lahore High Court suspended caretaker government's order and revived Gujrat as division.
However by June 2024, the division still didn't came to form due to budget constraints. The Punjab government had not issued the budget for the Gujrat commissioner office for the fiscal year 2023-24, jeopardizing the status of the division. Despite the Lahore High Court restoring Gujrat's divisional status the previous year, the division remains dysfunctional as no commissioner or regional police officer (RPO) has been appointed since the previous ones were transferred by the caretaker government. Currently, the additional charges of commissioner and RPO are held by the officials from Gujranwala, with three additional commissioners and a deputy director of food posted in Gujrat. However, the budget for these positions has not been released, forcing them to rely on Gujrat district administration for logistics. Additionally, construction at the proposed divisional complex site has been halted by another court decision due to environmental concerns. The creation of two new tehsils, Kunjah and Jalalpur Jattan, has also been stalled.
Administration
Four districts and 12 tehsils have been included in the proposed Gujrat Division.
