Incident

Tilottama (changed name to protect the identity), a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, was found dead on August 9, 2024. Her body was discovered in a seminar hall on the college campus, and an autopsy confirmed she had been sexually assaulted and murdered. This incident has sparked significant outrage and protests, leading to demands for a thorough investigation.

Investigation

The investigation into the death of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata is ongoing and has drawn significant public and professional attention. The victim was found in a seminar hall on August 9, 2024, in a semi-nude state with visible injuries, leading to initial suspicions of sexual assault and murder.

Initial Findings and Autopsy

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed by the Kolkata Police to investigate the case. The SIT includes members from the homicide department and other specialized units. The investigation is focusing on the circumstances leading to the discovery of the victim's body in the seminar hall of the hospital on August 9, 2024.

Aftermath

This incident sparked a great outrage amongst the nation-wide doctors who have threatened to halt services , the Federation of the Resident Doctors Association ( FORDA ) called for a nationwide halt on elective services from 12 August.

West Bengal

On 10 August , hundreds of junior doctors and paramedics from the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, Calcutta National Medical College , Medical College and Hospital, Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital as well as the government-run medical colleges outside of the city like the Burdwan Medical College and Hospital, Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital and other exempted themselves from their duties and protested for the safety of the medical institutions in the state. It was subjected to a heavy deployment of police and sparked dissatisfaction amongst the OPD patients who were deprived from the medical services as the protestors owed.

Delhi

The Residents Doctors Association in AIIMS, Delhi, held protests over the rape and murder of the medical student, in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The protesters held a candle march and demanded justice for the victim.
