Why was the information in the infobox on Xi Jinping's military service in the People's Liberation Army omitted? The article itself mentions that Xi spent a few years serving in the PLA with this citation, and several articles about politicians contain information on their military service (such as Vladimir Putin). 500 edits ago this information was included in the infobox, as seen here. So why was this omitted? I propose that this information be re-added to the infobox as shown: | allegiance =  China | branch = People's Liberation Army | serviceyears = 1979–1982 | unit = General Office of the Central Military Commission | rank = Secretary to Defence Minister Geng Biao
142.117.70.0 (talk) 03:45, 18 April 2024 (UTC)

He was a secretary to the Defence Minister, which is a civil position in itself, so that would also be a purely civil position and not really military service; Vladimir Putin, who you cited as an example, saw active service as a KGB agent and also held a military rank, which is why his military service is noted in the infobox. Place of birth

Xi Jinping was born in Beijing or in Shaanxi Province? I found different places from online sources. 2A02:B123:F00:B9BC:CA33:FFA8:1FAC:77C3 (talk) 17:46, 1 June 2024 (UTC)

It would be helpful to say what sources you're looking at if you want to know anything more than the correct answer, which is Beijing. Remsense 18:05, 1 June 2024 (UTC)
@Remsense there are a lot of sources that records his birthplace as "Shaanxi Province" (for example: Financial Times https://www.ft.com/content/b9ff5090-2d54-11e2-9988-00144feabdc0, Oxford University Press https://www.oxfordreference.com/display/10.1093/acref/9780191802997.001.0001/acref-9780191802997-e-3552, Encyclopedia Britannica https://www.britannica.com/biography/Xi-Jinping....) 2A02:B123:F00:B9BC:CA33:FFA8:1FAC:77C3 (talk) 18:12, 1 June 2024 (UTC)
Wait. I'm going to look into this, and I'll let you know in a moment whether I feel really foolish or not. Remsense 18:17, 1 June 2024 (UTC)
@Remsense In the first volume of "Xi Jinping: The Governance of China" written by Xi Jinping (it can be consulted here https://archive.org/details/xijinpingthegovernanceofchinavolume1/page/n310/mode/1up?q=Shaanxi+) there is written "Shaanxi, my home province". We should correct his birthplace here in Misplaced Pages. 2A02:B123:F04:D9BB:3F9D:6970:E9D7:AB8E (talk) 22:32, 1 June 2024 (UTC)
So I did look into this to make sure. It seems like a pretty basic mistake is being made by these sources: it's universally reported that Xi's home province is Shaanxi, that his father was born in Funing, and sometimes simply that he himself is "from" Funing. These are all true. However, it's pretty clear that official sources note he was born in Beijing when that word is used, which seems perfectly reasonable. If I'm born somewhere but grow up somewhere else, the latter is clearly my hometown/homeland/etc. Remsense 23:12, 1 June 2024 (UTC)
@Remsense Can you link some official and institutional sources which indicate his birthplace as "Beijing", please? This way I can get better information and possibly report the error to these websites. 2A02:B123:F00:5B2F:FC1D:325C:8596:DECB (talk) 23:30, 1 June 2024 (UTC)
Sure. Here's a 2007 post on the State Council website. Remsense 23:32, 1 June 2024 (UTC)
@Remsense In this official registration document https://www.dialoguechina.com/%E6%81%B6%E4%BF%97%E7%BB%B4%E5%9F%BA%E6%A1%88-%E8%B4%A3%E4%BB%BB%E4%BA%BA/ ------ https://nmsl.website/index.php?title=%E4%B9%A0%E8%BF%91%E5%B9%B3 there is written that he was born in Fuping County, Shaanxi Province. 2A02:B123:8F00:2A3F:D2F5:63C3:8EB0:5D81 (talk) 09:11, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
This is pretty bizarre, then! Remsense 09:34, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
How can we resolve this issue? Do we mention both places of birth? 82.61.178.15 (talk) 12:25, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
Upon checking some more sources, it seems I was right before: the sources that are listing Funing just misunderstood the Chinese sources saying his hometown is Funing. Every official source I've seen that specifies says that he was born in Beijing. The image above seems to be of unreliable provenance, I dug and only found it being used in weird places. Remsense 12:42, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
@Remsense But in this post https://www.facebook.com/share/v/3Ae2nLpDHXVTYSaa/ of China Central Television, which is the official mouthpiece of the Chinese Communist Party, it is reported that Xi Jinping was born in "Fuping, Shaanxi". 82.61.178.15 (talk) 13:38, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
Not quite. 1953年6月生,陝西富平人 means Born in June 1953, a native of Funing, Shaanxi. This is the phraseology that's being misunderstood. The placement of the comma may be rather helpful here. Remsense 13:44, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
