/r9k/ is a board on 4chan, an English-language imageboard. Created in 2008, the board implements Randall Munroe's "ROBOT9000" algorithm, which prevents exact reposts of content.
History and features
The board was created in 2008, implementing ROBOT9000, an algorithm designed to maintain content originality by preventing duplicate posts. It is credited as the origin of the "greentext" rhetorical style, which often centers around stories of social interactions and resulting ineptness. By 2012, the board's content had shifted significantly from its original form. Personal confession stories focusing on self-loathing, depression, and attempted suicide began to supersede the earlier /b/-style roleplaying, otaku, and video game discussion.
Controversies and influence
The board became notorious as a popular gathering place for the controversial online incel community. It popularized the "beta uprising" or "beta rebellion" meme, which promoted the idea of taking revenge against women, jocks and others perceived as the cause of incels' problems.
Connection to violence
The board gained increased scrutiny following the 2015 Umpqua Community College shooting, where the perpetrator, Chris Harper-Mercer, allegedly posted a warning on the board hours before the attack. The perpetrator of the Toronto van attack referenced 4chan and an incel rebellion in a Facebook post prior to his attack, while praising Elliot Rodger. He claimed to have communicated with both Harper-Mercer and Rodger on Reddit and 4chan and believed he was part of a "beta uprising".
