How references work

Simple references

These require two parts;

a)
Chzz is 98 years old.<ref> "The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009. </ref>
He likes tea. <ref>  </ref>
b) A section called "References" with the special code "{{reflist}}";
== References ==
{{reflist}}

(an existing article is likely to already have one of these sections)

To see the result of that, please look at user:chzz/demo/simpleref. Edit it, and check the code; perhaps make a test page of your own, such as user:DinosaursLoveExistence/reftest and try it out.

Named references

Chzz was born in 1837. <ref name=MyBook>
"The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009.
</ref>
Chzz lives in Footown.<ref name=MyBook/>

Note that the second usage has a / (and no closing ref tag). This needs a reference section as above; please see user:chzz/demo/namedref to see the result.

Citation templates

You can put anything you like between <ref> and </ref>, but using citation templates makes for a neat, consistent look;

Chzz has 37 Olympic medals. <ref> {{Citation
 | last = Smith
 | first = John
 | title = Olympic medal winners of the 20th century
 | publication-date = 2001
 | publisher = ]
 | page = 125
 | isbn = 0-521-37169-4
}}
</ref>

Please see user:chzz/demo/citeref to see the result.

For more help and tips on that subject, see user:chzz/help/refs.

Ways to improve Bill Price (physicist)

Hi, I'm Modern.Jewelry.Historian. DinosaursLoveExistence, thanks for creating Bill Price (physicist)!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. FRS members get a pass to Misplaced Pages according to WP:PROF, but this still needs references to support claims about the importance of his work.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse.

Proposed deletion of Extra Strong Mints

The article Extra Strong Mints has been proposed for deletion. The proposed deletion notice added to the article should explain why.

While all constructive contributions to Misplaced Pages are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

Proposed deletion of Attack on HMS Invincible

Notice

The article Attack on HMS Invincible has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Not sufficiently notable to have its own page. This article also contains information different to that in the one cited source. (In the one citation some claimed that "HMS Avenger shot it down" but the article states that, "The Royal Navy witnessed the Exocet missile running out of fuel and falling into the sea." I don't think it is worth merging this article with the HMS Invincible (R05) article in view of this inexplicable contradiction. Either the web page cited in this article is reliable or it is not. In any event the paragraph in the HMS Invincible (R05) page is more comprehensive and has better citations. It would make no sense to wiki-link this orphan article from the HMS Invincible (R05) article given the coverage of this incident there.

Massive numbers of speedy deletions on newly created categories

Something here is wrong. There is no way in which it is a sensible use of editor's time to be tagging for speedy deletion of so many newly-created categories.

Firstly, there can be no expectation that these categories would be populated so soon after creation (we're talking hours). So why tag them so rapidly? Surely whatever 'bot process is doing this can be set to ignore such categories until they've been around a while? A week?

Secondly, what is the problem here? Is the real claim that there are too many categories being created? If so, that's a behavioural issue and DinosaursLoveExistence might want to think about that, and are so many needed? I looked at Category:Leaf morphology with the thought of populating it (although it's not my field; the only botany I've ever studied was in Category:Plant root morphology). But it struck me that although this is an obvious intersection between Category:Plant morphology and Category:Leaves, I really wasn't seeing much navigational value to splitting this down into three. So are these categories necessary, useful or desirable?

On the other hand, are these deletions premature? Because I see a category like Category:Soviet female spies and that's obviously easily populatable. Just as obviously, it's a major irritant to any editor to have their work tag-bombed like this. The only way to get through the day is to just ignore the damned things, and as our process will pick up when they have been populated, there's no reason for the creator to act on the speedy at all.

But something is wrong here. I see two editors, one taking on a large volume of make-work (which could at least be deferred and thus reduced to the necessary) and the other being constantly poked. Neither of these things are good. I don't know what the solution is: fewer categories or less poking of them, but we ought to at least be talking about this, not posting billboards of automated messages. @Liz: Andy Dingley (talk) 11:34, 30 August 2024 (UTC)

I disagree with your thinking here, at least on general principle. It is important to keep the category system organized. We do that by making sure that categories make sense and comply with our guidelines. If new categories are being created that are not good for the category structure, the best time to get rid of them is as soon as possible after they are created. Whether a category is appropriate is not just a matter of whether there are articles that could be put in it. --Srleffler (talk) 14:01, 30 August 2024 (UTC)
Speedy deletion in such a case is not appropriate. Andy Dingley (talk) 17:29, 30 August 2024 (UTC)
I agree that a C1 speedy is not appropriate for a category that has been empty less than seven days.--Srleffler (talk) 19:24, 30 August 2024 (UTC)
That's not the point though. A speedy is for simple, uncontested and indeed uncontestable deletions. Ones where our assumption is that no reasonable editor would wish to challenge them (if they do, we of course permit that). So a category that's long-term empty is fair game. But any category that needs thought or discussion as to whether it's appropriate (such as Category:Optical microscope components where it's easily populated) will be outside the scope of those that may be speedied.
But to go back to my general point, which I think you've also missed. It is not good editing to have two editors working is such obvious opposition to each other. I do not know which ought to change, but something ought, and that would begin by discussion, not merely tag bombing. Andy Dingley (talk) 20:21, 30 August 2024 (UTC)
The categories being created are sparsely populated. They're extremely unhelpful and actually is what brought me here to ask that the category creator to slow down. Mason (talk) 17:17, 1 September 2024 (UTC)
  • Would that be better if they were well populated? Or would that still be bad? Should these categories exist, or are they basically inappropriate? Even if they can be populated, is it the case that they should not ? Andy Dingley (talk) 21:53, 1 September 2024 (UTC)
    Many of the categories wouldn't be helpful even if they were populated. I'd rather let them be deleted after 7 days, rather than do all the work that DinosaursLoveExistence refused to do. Mason (talk) 21:56, 1 September 2024 (UTC)
  • Then that's going to need CfDs. We can't (or at least shouldn't) assume they won't be populated, even minimally.
But really, if there's such broad agreement that these shouldn't even be getting created, we need to get to a place where they aren't. Whether that's by discussion (I'm disappointed that neither @DinosaursLoveExistence: nor @Liz: have commented here) or by coercion, i.e. topic bans. Andy Dingley (talk) 23:57, 1 September 2024 (UTC)
There's no need to summon Liz for this. The approach Liz has taken is exactly how tagging empty categories works. Usually, she follows up if a discussion hasn't already begun. DinosaursLoveExistence should be more communicative. However, less than .1% of their edits are on talk pages, so I doubt you'll get anything from them. Blocking them from category space could be an effective strategy. Mason (talk) 01:28, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
Has anyone tried actually asking them to stop? This conversation here is largely several editors using DLE's talk page to discuss the philosophy of when to use speedy on a category. I see lots of deletion notices on this page, and this extended side conversation where everyone (including me) is talking past the user whose talk page this is. I don't see anywhere in this wall of text where anyone has tried to reach out to DLE, explain what the issue is, and ask them to change what they are doing. Maybe you should try that before proposing blocks and bans and reporting to ANI??--Srleffler (talk) 17:32, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
I only came here to report a deletion proposal for one category. I gather from the wall of deletion notices that there may be a general problem with the way DLE is going about creating categories. I suggest that someone who has looked at these categories more broadly than I have should start a new section at the bottom of this page where they attempt to explain to DLE what the problem is and suggest how DLE could change their approach. Note also that DLE has not edited since this discussion began. Maybe they are just on vacation and haven't seen this discussion yet.--Srleffler (talk) 18:08, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
DLE has edited as an IP. Mason (talk) 23:10, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
  • I'm in two minds over these categories, which is why I've not posted them at ANI.
ANI would be appropriate if there was a clear majority here where the existence of the category was just wrong.
But some of these, like Category:Food ministers of the United Kingdom are much less clear. I have no interest in this category. It was left unpopulated (which isn't great: if the thing's worth doing at all, it's worth doing to a useful degree and completing or near-completing the task). But nor was a speedy deletion justified. <X of Y> is a clear intersection category here. There are food ministers, the UK has had some. We have valid parallel categories. The fact that the UK hasn't had one in years (it's now subsumed under a broader role) is literally the exception that proves the rule. The job is now unfamiliar, it's especially worth highlighting that we used to have them as single tasks.
Others, like Category:Optical microscope components are much less clear-cut. I think we need a different category than that one. Some, like the plant morphology sub-categorisation I see as a bad thing, but not an obvious bad thing (i.e. not speedy), it's one that would need some thought (If I'm wrong, tell me. If you're a botanist, then you're probably right.)
So I don't know what the problem is here. Is it creation? Or non-population? Should we even expect, let alone require, population of an 'obvious' category? Why? Would we enforce (near-)complete population of it? That doesn't sound very wiki-like, aren't we supposed to all muck in together?
Something is wrong here, but I'm no closer to knowing what. I can't point at something simple enough to ANI-hammer it, and there has been no response from DinosaursLoveExistence. Andy Dingley (talk) 22:44, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
I think at the heart of it, DLE doesn't engage with other editors, and that lack of engagement is creating more work for other people. They're wasting a lot of people's time. Personally, I think that category creators should add enough pages to the category so its clear what belongs. Most of the categories do not clearly benefit navigation, but they're not obvious. Which means that the category often require a full CFD where editors spend more time trying to figure out what the benefit is. They spend much more time figuring out the purpose than DLE ever spent making the category. I don't understand why DLE creates the categories that they do, and they're unwilling to explain it. Mason (talk) 22:53, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
On that basis, I'd support the big ANI-ish blocky options. Andy Dingley (talk) 00:41, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
They're effectively WP:sockpuppeting at this point. User_talk:46.18.177.138 "Editing under multiple IP addresses, or editing under both a named account and as an IP, when done deceptively or otherwise violating the principles of this policy, may be treated as the same level of disruption as editing under multiple accounts. When editors log out by mistake, they may wish to contact an editor with oversight access to ensure there is no misunderstanding." Mason (talk) 23:08, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
I have opened up a sock puppet investigation here. @Andy Dingley and Srleffler: Misplaced Pages:Sockpuppet investigations/DinosaursLoveExistence Mason (talk) 23:22, 5 September 2024 (UTC)

Hello, DinosaursLoveExistence,
I think this block is partially coming from your refusal to communicate with other editors who have questions about your editing. You should respond to messages on your User talk page. Liz 20:27, 18 September 2024 (UTC)
Agreed, some of the categories you've created are useful, but many are not. Editing Misplaced Pages is a collaborative process and simply refusing to respond to multiple editors expressing concerns is highly problematic. AusLondonder (talk) 22:40, 18 September 2024 (UTC)
I echo this sentiment. Communication is important, and your refusal to communicate is wasting the time of other editors. Mason (talk) 20:59, 19 September 2024 (UTC)

Category:North Korean cults of personality

I know you're not currently active and have been blocked, but if you do return I'd love to understand your rationale for creating this category. You removed the article North Korean cult of personality from the Category:Cults of personality, meaning that topic (arguably the most notable example) is now absent from the main category containing articles about cults of personality and moved to a seperate category containing just one article. That makes absolutely no sense. It expressly made navigation more difficult. AusLondonder (talk) 13:47, 19 September 2024 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Eye Health UK

Notice

The article Eye Health UK has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Lacking secondary sources, does not appear to meet WP:ORGCRIT.

We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

Speedy deletion nomination of Institute of Traffic Accident Investigators

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Institute of Traffic Accident Investigators requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a company, corporation or organization that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Misplaced Pages's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. ♠PMC(talk) 05:53, 2 November 2024 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Institute of Traffic Accident Investigators

Notice

The article Institute of Traffic Accident Investigators has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

A7 declined because it publishes a journal and has existed since 1988. Neither publishing a journal nor merely existing are credible claims to significance. I did not locate any significant sourcing about this organization on a search, only publications by them or citing them.

♠PMC(talk) 23:12, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
