Monica Smit is an Australian anti-vaccine and anti-lockdown protester. She is the founder of Reignite Democracy Australia, an anti-lockdown and COVID-19 conspiracy group. In August 2001, she was remanded in custody after being charged with inciting people to attend break COVID lockdown restrictions and refusing to agree to her bail conditions. Smit spent 22 days in custody before being released, when she agreed to bail conditions.
After Smit refused to agree to her bail conditions, her partner Morgan Jonas, an anti-lockdown activist and critic of then Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews, launched a crowdfunding campaign for her legal defence. During Smit's time in custody she received $50,000 per day. The crowdfunding raised $247,000 in five days regardless of some of Smit’s lawyers representing her pro-Bono.
