Reactor usage

The ADE-2 is a dual use water-cooled thermal graphite-moderated reactor.

History

Construction has started in December 1963. Reactor was shutdown in April 2010.

Reactor was a dual-purpose - producing weapons-grade plutonium and providing heat and electricity.

The scope of decommissioning was much greater than with AD and ADE-1, which were single-purpose, performed only defense tasks.

In 2021 it was decided to make ADE-2 a museum exhibition.

Two legacy AD and ADE-1 are almost decommissioned. Three others ADE-3, ADE-4 and ADE-5 are being decommissioned.

Other similar types

The first AD reactor has started in 1958 (shutdown in 1992) only for plutonium production purpose. The second ADE-1 has started in 1961 (shutdown in 1992) supposed to produce electricity in addition, but never did ("E" stands for energy in its name). Around 27,000 prisoners worked on construction of underground reactors. ADE-3 has started in 1961, ADE-4 in 1964, ADE-5 in 1965 - all three were closed in 2008 in Seversk at Sibirskaya Nuclear Power Plant. Two older dual purpose reactors I-1 began operation in 1955 (closed in 1990) and EI-2 started in 1958 (closed in 1991) in Seversk at Sibirskaya Nuclear Power Plant.
