Madame Roesijati R. Sukardi was an Indonesian journalist and a prominent member of the Indonesian Women's Movement during the mid-20th century. She played a significant role in advocating for women's rights and fostering international solidarity among women's organizations.
International Engagement
In 1960, Madame Sukardi was invited by the Union of Australian Women (UAW) to participate in a national tour across Australia, coinciding with International Women's Day (IWD) celebrations. She was accompanied by Madam Chao Feng of the National Women's Federation of China. Their visit aimed to strengthen ties between women's organizations in Indonesia, China, and Australia, promoting mutual understanding and collaboration in the pursuit of gender equality and women's rights. However, due to Australia's political climate at the time, there were challenges in securing visas for the delegates, leading to delays that caused them to miss several scheduled meetings.
Advocacy and Impact
Madame Sukardi's involvement in the tour highlighted the importance of international solidarity among women's organizations during a period of significant political tension. Her participation contributed to fostering mutual understanding and collaboration in the pursuit of gender equality and women's rights.
