Bita Malekian is a Canadian mechanical engineer and social entrepreneur. She is the founder of Water Movement, a non-profit organization that supports water treatment operators in remote and underserved communities in Canada.
Early life and education
Malekian earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary in 2018. She completed a Master of Engineering (MEng) in Chemical Engineering at the same institution in 2021.
Career
In 2018, Malekian founded Water Movement, a non-profit organization that provides training resources and tools for water operators. The organization's resources include a video library and a mobile application for offline use in regions with limited internet access.
Malekian currently works as a professional Engineer at Water Movement. Her initiatives align with the objectives of United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6, which focuses on access to clean water and sanitation.
Malekian collaborated with Yukon University to develop QR-code-enabled training materials to address workforce shortages in water management. Water Movement also produced a documentary featuring Indigenous water operators and examining water-related challenges in their communities.
In 2019, Malekian participated in the Water Innovation Lab, where she worked on a project incorporating sensory technology developed by the University of Alberta to address water advisories among First Nations youth.
In 2021, Malekian's team placed third in the World’s Challenge Challenge global finals, receiving a $7,500 prize for their Water Movement project.
Malekian has been featured in Education News Canada, where she discussed her advocacy for water as a human right and the ongoing water crises affecting Indigenous populations in Canada.
National Indigenous Water Operators Day
Malekian contributed to the establishment of National Indigenous Water Operators Day, first observed on March 21, 2022. The event, held at Calgary City Hall, recognized the work of water operators in Indigenous communities.
Recognition
Malekian was named one of Alberta’s Top 30 Under 30 and received the Schulich Environment and Sustainability Alumni Award in 2021. That year, she was also recognized by Young Women in Energy and named a L'Oréal Paris Women of Worth Canadian Honouree for her work with Water Movement.
She was recognized by Academy Award winner Helen Mirren and featured on the cover of Ethical Entrepreneur Magazine.
