Dhani or Dhanni (دھنّی; pronounced [ˈd̥ə˥˩n.niː]) is a western dialect of Punjabi spoken in the southern-eastern regions of Pothohar Plateau in Punjab, Pakistan. It is primarily spoken in the Chakwal district, and the southern portions of the Attock and Jhelum districts. Its name is derived from Dhan valley, located 35 km away from Rawalpindi. It has many sub-dialects including Sohāī̃ (سوہائیِں), spoken west of the Soan River, in the tehsils of Fateh Jang and Pindi Gheb in Attock District.
It is closely related to Shahpuri and Jhangvi dialects. It, along with Shahpuri, Jhangvi, and Thali, is intermediate between Majhi (Central Punjabi) and Lahnda (Western Punjabi).
Classification
In the 1920s G.A. Grierson in his Linguistic Survey of India called this group North-Western Lahnda. Jatki is a common name for the Jhangvi dialect, Shahpuri dialect and Dhani dialect. The glotlog codes for these are:
