The Zadar High School Shooting was a school shooting that occured on October 9, 1972, at Zadar High School (now Vladimir Nazor High School) in Socialist Republic of Croatia of Yugoslavia (now Croatia). This was the first school attack in Croatia before the 2024 Zagreb school stabbing.
On the morning of October 9, 1972, a 19-year-old Serbian student, Milorad Vulinović killed history professor Vica Vlatković (†43) with father's Beretta M70 gun at the High School in Zadar and seriously wounded sociology professor Gojko Matulina († 33), who died earlier in the hospital. The incident was witnessed by Momir Bulatović, future president of Montenegro, and former Croatian actress Jelica Vlajki, who were studying in Zadar High School at this time.
Not long after the murder, a teacher from the school met Vulinović on the street and saw him eating cremeschnittes in the nearby Jadran patisserie, awaiting arrest.
Vulinović stated during the police interrogation that he hated Vlatković, who sympathized with the Croatian Spring. Psychiatric experts found that Vulinović suffered from a psychopathic personality with a tendency towards schizoid psychopathy. Vulinović was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Goli otok, the most severe sentence for young adults in Yugoslavia.
After the murder, October 10, there were several thousand commemorations in Zadar. The high school library in Zadar still bears the names of Vlatković and Matulina. Later, two educational institutions in Zadar were named after them.
