Lanna International Airport is a proposed airport in Lamphun Ban Thi, Chiang Mai, Thailand, approximately 25km from Chiang Mai Airport. It is currently at its feasibility stage, and is expected to begin construction by 2027 and open by 2032.
Development
Construction of Lanna International Airport is to begin by 2027 and to open by 2032 according to Airports of Thailand (AoT). The airport is expected to serve 20,000,000 passengers annually.
Context
Leading up to September 30 2017, Chiang Mai Airport has handled 9.97 million passengers, an 8.3% increase compared to 2016. This has surpassed its annual capacity of 8 million passengers. Chiang Mai Airport is also operating at it’s full capacity, handling about 15 flights per hour, with plans to increase to 30 flights per hour after the expansion.
Proposals
From January to early February 2018, AoT board of directors chaired by Prasong Poontaneat identified and inspected two potential locations for a second airport. The locations are in the Lamphun province and the Saraphi district, which are both owned by the government. It was estimated that 5,000-6,000 rai are needed for the developments. By May, the Airports of Thailand’s board approved plans to develop a two new airports at Chiang Mai and Phuket, requiring a cost of 120 billion baht (3.7 billion USD). The construction was to begin in 2019 and complete by 2025. However, these plans went quiet and were not pursued due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
On September 2023, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin confirmed the construction of the second airport, aimed to ease capacity constraints at the existing Chiang Mai Airport and to increase tourism in the region. During a meeting with local business executives in Chiang Mai University, they recommended naming the new airport “Lanna International Airport” to honor the Lanna Kingdom which significantly played in the area’s history.
In January 2024, Thailand's Prime Minister visited Chiang Mai to hear a progress report on the airport. By May, AoT President Kirati Kitmanawa announced that the feasibility study of the airport is to be completed by the end of 2024. The feasibility study covers the economic and financial potential, and also the environmental impact of the airport.
Land
40% of the land is already owned by the government, which saves the government 2.5 billion baht in expropriation costs. The Treasury Department would be responsible for expropriating land for the construction in 2027. The airport occupies 6,500 rai of land with a cost of 72 billion baht, with most of the land belonging to private owners.
