Diacriticism
Rôle-playing is all well and good, but have you ever experienced the thrill of encountering a word with both an umlaut and a diaeresis, such as übernaïve? 28bytes (talk) 03:08, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- I've been criticized for having ever used even one diacritical mark. Two in one word would reflect more naïveté than I want on my résumé. Regards, Newyorkbrad (talk) 04:06, 22 November 2024 (UTC)

Consultation on long term protection request for Alice Walton
I've never requested long term protection for an article before, so would like to consult with a respected experienced admin; and while I know you demur on technical knowledge, no one tops you for respect. So, Alice Walton (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) is an article about a notable living person that has a noticeable percentage of recent edits being disruption, namely putting in a traffic stop she was involved in in 2011. The issue is that the subject is one of the wealthiest people in the US, and has also been involved in multiple traffic accidents, including one which broke her leg, and one that killed another person. Those had a noticeable impact (so to speak) so are in the article. Even one which merely resulted in a fine is in the article. The traffic stop, however, did not lead to any charges, so after discussion, the decision has been made to leave it out. But it seems there are a noticeable number of people who believe social justice is the same thing as trying to cause every bit of harm to the extremely rich that they can. Hence the edits. As you can see from the article history, they aren't that often, a few every month or two, but they and their reversions do make up more than half of recent edits. So, would you advise long term semi-protection, or pending changes protection, or ... just continuing to revert the edits as they are made? --GRuban (talk) 00:14, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- @GRuban: Thanks for the message and for thinking of me. I will be glad to take a look at this and let you know what I think, but I'm traveling with limited online time over the holiday weekend, so it may not be for a couple of days. Regards, Newyorkbrad (talk) 01:40, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- @GRuban:, hope you don't mind but as a veteran NYB talk page watcher, I picked up on this. I've semi-protected the page for 2 years due to persistent violations of WP:BLP. This is pretty standard stuff. Once things are getting to the point of needing revision-deletion, we're definitely into semi-protection areas. Risker (talk) 04:25, 30 November 2024 (UTC)

A "Thanks-for-Brightening-My-Day" award for you
@Newyorkbrad, I've recently created a sort of personal award to show my appreciation somewhere between just a thank-you and a full-fledged barnstar for Wikipedians who "make my day" with delightful little snippets of dry humor or insightful wisdom. Or else point me toward them, as you did.
You are the 1st recipient of this new award (see below) — for answering my query as to where I could re-access a delightful little exchange that took place in Wiki messaging on Nov. 6 between Just Step Sideways, who was reporting acute distress over the "state of his country" but was sure he could fix it by morning "if someone could just explain it to him," and two other editors. You turned out to be the person who made the first of the comments in response, and it totally cracked me up. Which was, “If you really can totally fix the country in the morning, I'll be very impressed.”
The second contributor in that exchange, Cyberpower, will also receive this award for a comment with similar crack-up results: “Yes, please fix the country in the morning. I have a hot cappuccino waiting for you.” Augnablik (talk) 12:21, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Augnablik: Thank you very much. Regards, Newyorkbrad (talk) 03:31, 2 December 2024 (UTC)
