He was born in 1866 and actively engaged the Macedonian Struggle (Greek: Μακεδονικός Αγώνας). thumb|Macedonian Struggle Committee Merkourios Karakostis was born in Veria, Macedonia, Greece, in 1866. He was professionally active in trade, while during the period of Ottoman Turkish rule he became a Demogeron and School Superintendent. He was actively involved in the Macedonian Struggle as President of the "Macedonian Struggle Committee of Veria” (1904-1908), also known as "National Defense”. He assumed the overall leadership when A. Siormanolakis was exiled. His mansion, which was located on the corner of E. Venizelos - M. Karakostis became the headquarters of the committee. The street where the Karakostis family mansion was located, to this day, bears his name. The Committee included Stefanos Sakellaridis, Ioannis Karakostis, Antonios Tousas, Nikolaos Antoniadis, Theodoros Raktivan, Archimandrite Ambrosios Nikolaidis, Grigorios Raktivan, Merkourios Karakostis, Emmanouil Veltsidis, Anastasios Siormanolakis (From left to right in the photo) . Risking their lives, they organized and participated in one of the most important fierce Greek struggles, a unique guerrilla war in every part of Macedonia, which prepared the ground for the victorious liberation of Greece and of countries of the Balkan Peninsula at the north of Greece.
After liberation he was elected Municipal Counclor and member of the Higher Parish Delegation. Greece honored him for his political contribution with a Silver Knight's Cross and other commemorative medals, such as the Medal of the Macedonian Struggle.
The printed archival material of the collection of Merkourios Karakostis was donated to the Museum of Education of Veria by his granddaughter, Elisabeth Karakosti - Matopoulou. His library includes more than 600 titles.
