It was commissioned by piccoloist and Philadelphia Orchestra chair Erica Peel to be an addition to the instrument’s limited repertoire. The work received its premiere in Verizon Hall in 2022 as part of the Digital Stage Series by the piccoloist Erica Peel and the Philadelphia Orchestra under the conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
Composition
The concerto is structured into three contrasting and colorful movements as follows:
- Allegro
- Moderato, dreamy
- Vivace
Reception
Yannick Nézet-Séguin described this work as, “an extraordinary addition to the limited repertoire.” The Chicago Symphony Orchestra refers to her work as being,” something of a hero in the flute and piccolo community.”
