On December 27, 2024, the Syrian Transitional Government announced that it had arrested Mohammed Kanjo Hassan, former head of the military judiciary under the Assad regime and a prison guard at Sednaya prison.

Background

Kanjo Hassan was the head of Syria's military field court from 2011 to 2014. Later on, Kanjo Hassan was promoted to chief of military justice across Syria, It is believed that Kanjo Hassan made $150 million from bribes paid by relatives of detainees desperate for information on their loved ones.

After the fall of the Assad regime, Kanjo Hassan would go into hiding.

Events

Deadly clashes erupted in the coastal province of Tartus between security forces that tried to arrest Kanjo Hassan and gunmen who sought to protect him. The next day, Kanjo Hassan was arrested in the village of Khirbet al-Ma'zah in the countryside of Tartus along with his 20 other members of the Assad government during a large-scale security campaign carried out by the Military Operations Department.
