Borth Volunteer Fire Unit is one of only two fire stations in England and Wales manned entirely by unpaid volunteers. The unit is part of Ceredigion Command of Mid and West Wales Fire & Rescue Service.

History

Borth Volunteer Fire Unit began in 1950 with a surplus WWII Land Rover and pump on a trailer owned by one of the volunteers.

The headquarters of the fire unit used to be the Borth Bakery, from which the duty operator would call out his eight possible on-call volunteers.

A new fire station for the unit was opened on 28th July 2011 by Lord Elystan Morgan.

In March 2019, Borth Fire Station received a Small Fires Unit. The SFU is a specialist fire appliance, capable of "responding to incidents involving small fires and minor special service calls. It can carry up to five persons and has a water tank of 450 litres."

Operations

The unit has a L4P 4x4 Ford Transit appliance carrying a pump, 80 gallons of water, and various other fire fighting equipment to respond to incidents. Borth Fire Unit responds to around 25-40 calls a year ranging from flooding, road traffic accidents and fires.
