Kang Hye-yeon (Korean: 강혜연; born December 8, 1990) is a South Korean trot singer. She debuted as an original member of EXID on February 16, 2012, and has been active as a trot singer since then.

Overview

Kang Hye-yeon(강혜연) was formerly a member of girl group EXID as 'Dami'(다미) and BESTie as 'Hye-yeon'(혜연), but switched to being a trot singer in 2018 with the release of "Waddaya"(왔다야) and is active under her real name 'Kang Hye-yeon'(강혜연). She has been recognized for her singing skills by subscribers on her YouTube channel. After appearing on 'Golden Oldies'(가요무대), she became known through her appearances on various music programs and events. She appeared as a regular guest on 'Hurricane Radio'(허리케인 라디오) and gained fame after participating in TV Chosun's 'Tomorrow is Miss Trot 2'(내일은 미스트롯2), where she was given the nickname 'Trot Squirrel'(트롯다람쥐). She has been actively working as a singer, DJ, MC, and model on TV, radio, and various events, and is currently a regular on KBS's 'Hometown at 6'(6시 내고향).

After turning into a trot singer, she released the song "Waddaya"(왔다야) in October 2018, which became a huge hit among various generations and has established itself as her signature song to this day. After debuting as a trot singer, she made her first appearance on the stage of MBC's "Gayo Best"(가요베스트) with "Waddaya"(왔다야).

She collects and grows dozens of plant species, and is also interested in film photography and developing photos.

Debut

While preparing for college, she saw an audition notice on the internet, recorded an MP3 and sent a demo file, passed, and after being an idol trainee, she joined the girl group EXID and , debuted on February 16, 2012 with the single album 《HOLLA》.

Career with EXID

On December 4, 2011, composer 'Shinsadong Tiger' (real name Lee Ho-yang)(이양호), known as the 'Midas Hand of the K-Pop Industry', revealed for the first time a photo of a new six-member girl group through his Twitter. He wrote, "I'm raising six tigers these days." He posted an affectionate photo with 'EXID (Exceed In Dreaming, 꿈을 넘어서다),' who are scheduled to debut in early 2012.

They were scheduled to debut at the end of January 2012, but due to member LE's sudden leg injury, their debut was postponed to February 16th. AB Entertainment, EXID's agency, revealed the faces of the six members on February 8th, and Kang Hye-Yeon was revealed under the name 'Dami'다미. Kang Hye-yeon(Dami) is slightly shorter than the other members and has short, wavy hair that she dyes in a yellow-brown tone. An AB Entertainment official explained, "We were originally going to go with Exceed, but some said the pronunciation was too strong and that it was similar to the name of a drug, so we changed it to EXID." It was a free-range system where the members practiced on their own, figured out concepts and choreography, and even wrote their own lyrics.

She left EXID almost two months after the release of their debut album.

Career with BESTie

After that, she signed with YNB Entertainment along with 'Haeryung'(해령) and 'Yooji'(유지), who were active in EXID together, and worked as the lead vocalist and leader of the four-member girl group BESTie. She terminated her contract with her agency, YNB Entertainment, on October 25, 2018, and BESTie disbanded on November 16, 2018 due to the agency's bankruptcy. Kang Hye-yeon, who made her solo debut, signed an exclusive contract with STAR Entertainment, and released the single "Waddaya"(왔다야) on October 31, 2018, turning into a trot singer.

It is said that she continued to think about trot even when she was active as an idol singer. She earned the nickname 'Queen of Part-Time Jobs' because she worked various part-time jobs to make a living as an idol singer and girl group member.

Trot singer activities

• 〈Reason for turning into a Trot singer〉 She said, "I've always liked Trot since I was little, and I've always heard people around me say that I resemble senior Jang Yoon-jung(장윤정), so I didn't have any aversion to Trot from the beginning." Her love for Trot was so special that she even competed on Mnet's trot survival program 'Trot X'(트로트X) (2014) while she was a member of a girl group. Her current agency's CEO Choi Yong-soo(최양수), who noticed her challenging the 'Trot X' stage, realized her potential for success, and she agreed to the genre change without hesitation. She freely uses her clear and refreshing tone and voice, as well as her unique high-pitched range. According to Kang Hye-yeon, after she imitated Jang Yoon-jeong's line "Jjanjjara"(짠짜라) on a radio program, which started with "Mak~", the CEO of her current agency took notice of her, saying, "There are such talents among idols!" After her contract with her former girl group agency ended, the CEO of SOO Entertainment contacted her and said, "You have to do trot. There's nothing you can do." She said, "Yes, I understand," and signed the contract.

• 〈Nickname〉 She dyed her hair yellow in 2018 and went by the nickname 'Yellow-Haired Kang Hye-yeon', and also used the nickname 'National Vitamin'(국민비타민). She gained recognition through music stages and earned the nickname 'Trot-dol'(트롯돌). In 2021, she participated in 'Tomorrow's Miss Trot 2'(내일은 미스트롯2) and jumped around the stage and sang songs with a cute squirrel-like appearance, earning the nickname 'Trot Squirrel'(트롯다람쥐).

• On April 30, 2021, her first full-length album, "Sunday Hye-yeon"((선데이혜연)) was released on USB and CD. It contains 9 songs in various genres such as semi-trot, traditional trot, and EDM versions. The title songs are "If say, at once"(척하면 척) and "Waddaya (2021)"(왔다야). "If say, at once"(척하면 척) was written and composed by Kang Hye-yeon's younger brother, Dewayle, and "Waddaya (2021)" is a re-release of her trot singer debut single "Waddaya"(왔다야) with a higher level of completion. Both songs have risen to the top of the trot charts and are gaining popularity. Since the release of "Tomorrow's Miss Trot 2"(내일은 미스트롯2) and her full-length album, she has been actively promoting "If say, at once" and "Waddaya (2021)" on many stages such as radio, TV, and event halls.
