Urimajalu Rama Bhat,former 2-time MLA, former chairman of CAMPCO, co-founder of Sri Vivekananda College in Puttur was born into an undivided Havyaka family in Urimajalu near Kabak-Vittal. He had laid a strong foundation for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and was one of the few powerful politicians in the state when the BJP was not a force to be reckoned with.
He was the advocate, trustee of Puttur Mahalingeshwara temple, president of municipal council, president of Campco, strong pillar of Puttur Vivekananda Vidyavardhaka Sangha, Puttur MLA and was also known as the ‘Bheeshma’ of BJP. He nurtured several leaders. He protested against the emergency imposed by late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and was imprisoned. He had taught Kannada to L K Advani while in jail. He stayed away from politics after 1985 but was the main think tank of BJP. His opinions were important in the party activities.
A conscience-keeper of the party and a champion of value-based education, Sri Vivekananda College in Puttur founded by him has rolled out thousands of people who are outstanding professionals with sound morals and rich ethics. As a member of the Assembly, Ram Bhat’s speeches were always mature, sober with clarity and courage of conviction
He passed away at his residence in Kombettu near Puttur on Monday. Bhat was 92 and died of age-related illness.
