This list shows living Prime Ministers of India from the time of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India in 1947, to the present time of the 14th prime minister Narendra Modi. Currently, apart from the incumbent Narendra Modi, the only living former prime minister is H. D. Deve Gowda.
H. D. Deve Gowda became the only living former Prime Minister following the death of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in 26 December 2024.

- April 21, 1997 to January 15, 1998 – The former Prime Ministers who were alive during the Prime Ministership of Inder Kumar Gujral are: Gulzarilal Nanda, Vishwanath Pratap Singh, Chandra Shekhar, P. V. Narasimha Rao, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and H. D. Deve Gowda.
- May 22, 2004 to December 23, 2004 – The former Prime Ministers who were alive during the Prime Ministership of Dr. Manmohan Singh are: Vishwanath Pratap Singh, Chandra Shekhar, P. V. Narasimha Rao, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, H. D. Deve Gowda and Inder Kumar Gujral.
Time periods with the lowest number of living former prime ministers
There have been three tenured Prime Ministers, who were the only living Prime Ministers who had no preceding Prime Minister:
- August 15, 1947 to May 27, 1964 - Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister, had no predecessor.
- May 27, 1964 to June 6, 1964 – Gulzarilal Nanda, following the death of his predecessor, Jawaharlal Nehru.
- January 11, 1966 to January 24, 1966 – Gulzarilal Nanda, following the death of his last surviving predecessor, Lal Bahadur Shastri.
