Apify is a web scraping platform for extracting data from websites and automating workflows a human would otherwise complete manually in a web browser. It has over 3,000 serverless cloud programs called Actors that carry out specific functions, such as a Google Trends scraper and website content crawler. Its clients include Siemens, Decathlon, T-Mobile, Groupon, Accenture, Microsoft, and the European Commission.
History
Apify (originally named Apifier) began as a project in 2015 when its founders Jan Čurn and Jakub Balada participated in the first batch of the Y Combinator Fellowship program. The company was incorporated as Apifier s.r.o. on February 15, 2016. The company changed its name to Apify in October 2017. In 2021, Apify ranked 14th in the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 Central Europe 2021. As of 2022, 60% of Apify's revenue was U.S.-based.
From 2019 to 2024, Apify bootstrapped its growth. In 2024, Apify received €2.8 million in funding from J&T Ventures and others.
While the company grew rapidly during the COVID-19 pandemic, in 2022, Apify had to lay off employees when the cooling venture capital market and rising central bank interest rates preempted an anticipated investment round.
With the public release of ChatGPT, companies using Apify's tools for AI training has become one of its key markets.
The company releases an annual Black Friday report on deceptive discounting practices by businesses.
In 2023, Apify was ranked as the 187th fastest-growing European company in the Financial Times ranking. In 2024, CzechCrunch named it as one of its "10 Hot Startups" for 2024.
