Danzig was the name of a city that has historically belonged to both the Germans and the Poles. Since the end of the Second World War, in 1945, it has belonged to the modern state of Poland, and is called Gdańsk.

Due to the predominantly Germanic background between 1308 and 1945, "Danzig" refers to the city in this historical context: for example, the Free City of Danzig. In German, the city continues today to be known as "Danzig", just as in Polish the city was known as "Gdańsk" even prior to 1945.
