Early in his career he appeared as himself as a contestant on You Bet Your Life opposite Groucho Marx, demonstrating a comic barrage of jive talk.
Schell is best known for playing the part of Private Duke Slater on the Jim Nabors vehicle Gomer Pyle, USMC. He played this role for three years, starred as a disc jockey for one season in his own sitcom, Good Morning, World and then returned to the role of Duke on Gomer Pyle, albeit now promoted to Corporal. He used this experience to refer to himself self-deprecatingly in his stand-up routine as "America's slowest-rising young comic."
Ronnie Schell co-starred with Jack Cassidy and Lynn Redgrave in a TV special based on Olsen and Johnson's crazy revue Hellzapoppin'. Science-fiction and Anime fans recall Schell as the voice of "Jason" on the TV cartoon Battle of the Planets. In an episode of That Girl he sold a 'used' engagement ring to Donald, who gave it to Ann Marie (Marlo Thomas).
