The Syrian occupation of Lebanon began in 1976 in response to a Lebanese government invitation during Lebanon's civil war, and ended in 2005 in response to domestic Lebanese and international pressure after the murder of the billionaire former Lebanese Prime Minister, Rafik Hariri. Syria used its occupation of Lebanon to pressure Israel.
