Albert Agarunov (Azeri Albert Ağarunov) (1969- May 7, 1992) is a National Hero of Azerbaijan. Albert is known for his courageous actions to defend his motherland during the Nagorno-Karabakh war. He was among those who were part of last resistance in Shusha, which was occupied by Armenian forces on May 9, 1992. Jews in Azerbaijan, who total around 30 thousand people, have enjoyed religious and cultural freedom ever since they have settled there. Jews have played an important role in daily life of Azerbaijan. As a consequence of Armenian aggression on Azerbaijan in early 1990's, some Jews had to move. Jewish community of Guba ] prides itself with being an all-sided contributor in Azerbaijan's sovereignty. Albert Agarunov is remembered as one of the brave fighters of this community's motherland ]. Every year many Jews in Azerbaijan commemorate Albert Agarunov's contributions to secure territorial integrity of Azerbaijan by visiting and laying flowers on his grave. ] The national hero was buried in Alley of Martyrs in May 1992.
