Flórián Albert (born September 15, 1941 in Hercegszántó) was a Hungarian football striker, who was named European Footballer of the Year in 1967. He has been described as one of the most elegant footballers of all time.
Early Life
The son of a blacksmith, Albert grew up in the little town of Hercegezante near the border with the former Yugoslavia, where he got his first taste of the game playing with his two brothers. When the family later moved to Budapest, he joined the country's most popular club Ferencváros.
Career
Albert spent his club career with only one club: Ferencváros, where he played from 1958 to 1974. He made his debut with Ferencváros at the age of 16. Two games later, he received his call up from the Hungarian national team. He scored 32 goals in 75 caps for the Hungarian national team. He tied five others for as the top scorer at the 1962 World Cup, with four goals.
