The University of Texas at Tyler, also referred to as UT Tyler, is a public university located in Tyler, Texas, USA. It has a student body of over 5,900, a 17:1 student to faculty ratio, and a sprawling, park-like campus. UT Tyler is part of the University of Texas System.

History

The University of Texas at Tyler was originally founded in 1971 as Tyler State College. It was renamed Texas Eastern College in 1975, and then joined the University of Texas System in 1979. UT Tyler was initially an upper level university, teaching only upper division undergraduate and graduate level classes. In 1997, with the addition of lower division classes, UT Tyler became a full four-year university. It is the only UT System campus serving the East Texas region.

Campus

UT Tyler’s main campus is located on 200 acres in Tyler, Texas. The university has satellite campuses in nearby cities of Longview, Texas and Palestine, Texas.

The Herrington Patriot Center includes a state-of-the-art fitness center with cardio-theater and circuit training, racquetball court, heated pool and spa, indoor walking/jogging track, and gymnasium/convocation area with basketball/volleyball court and seating for 2,300.

UT Tyler’s R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center attracts a wide array of cultural entertainment, and 26,000 patrons attend the performances annually.

UT Tyler offers over 80 student organizations including Greek fraternities and sororities.

Athletics

UT Tyler competes in the American Southwest Conference of the NCAA's Division III. Both the men's and women's sports teams are referred to as the Patriots.

Patriot student-athletes have won 6 American Southwest Conference championships and 71 ASC All Academic Team awards. The women’s basketball team has won the ASC East Division Championship 2 years in a row.

In May, 2007, UT Tyler finished their four-year provisional status with the NCAA as a start-up athletic program. In September of 2007, the Patriots will be eligible to compete in the NCAA playoffs for the first time.

UT Tyler student athletes have been found to earn a higher grade point ratio than the student body as a whole.
