Child pornography refers to pornographic images of children. The production of child pornography is widely regarded as a form of child abuse. As such the images are illegal in most countries. Some outlaw only production, while others also prohibit possession of child pornography. Prohibition generally covers visual representations of sexual behaviour by children under a given age but may also include all images of nude children, unless an artistic justification can be provided.

Child pornography as child abuse

Where child pornography involves depictions of children engaging in sexual conduct, the production of this material will in itself be sexual abuse in most countries. Although in some cases the methods used to capture may not involve coercion or manipulation, children are generally seen as below the age where they are able to effectively consent to images of them being used for sexual purposes.
