He was Liberal Democrat member of Parliament for Cheltenham from 1992 until he stepped down at the 2005 general election.
In 2000, a deranged constituent attacked him and an assistant, Andrew Pennington (a local councillor) with a Japanese samurai sword. Pennington was killed, and Jones was severely injured. The assailant, Robert Ashman, was found guilty of manslaughter and attempted murder, and was sent to a secure hospital.
On 13 May 2005 it was announced that he would be created a life peer.
