"Beautiful Liar"
Song

"Beautiful Liar" is an R&B/Latin pop song recorded by American singer Beyoncé and Colombian singer Shakira. The song was written by Beyoncé, Amanda Ghost, Ian Dench, and Norwegian songwriters Mikkel S. Eriksen and Tor Erik Hermansen (pka. StarGate). It is the first song and the first single released from the deluxe edition of Beyoncé's second studio album B’Day, making it the fifth song (fourth outside the U.S.) released from B'Day. The song was produced by production team StarGate and Beyoncé and it was mixed by Gustavo Celis. It has versions in Spanish, English and Spanglish. It holds the distinction of having the largest upward movement on the Billboard Hot 100, moving 91 positions from 94 to 3 the week of April 7 2007.

Background

The duet had been confirmed by Beyoncé in an interview with Univision in December 2006. In a recent MTV interview, she described how she had met Shakira several times at various awards shows over the recent years. After recording the Latin-themed song solo, Beyoncé approached her to appear on it; Shakira accepted.

Beyoncé has stated that the song is about female empowerment and what it means to be one, in keeping with the theme of the album. The protagonists sing about being charmed by the same man; instead of fighting over him, they decide not to start a drama or waste their time.

The original Spanglish version featured Beyoncé singing solo, and this leaked onto the internet in late 2006. However the duet version was recorded (in English) on January 23 2007 in Miami by Gustavo Celis. By February 27 2007 it had leaked on to the Internet. The single started playing on the radio just after the video was premiered on MTV's Total Request Live and BET's 106 and Park on February 28 2007. It premiered on the same day as Beyoncé's other single, "Upgrade U". The song was made available on iTunes on March 20 2007. Puerto Rican reggaeton artist Don Omar has recorded verses to be used in a remix of the song, but was never released.

In the UK, the majority of radio stations such as Radio 1 played a more up-beat, dance remix of "Beautiful Liar" by the Freemasons, instead of the original mix. A video was made for the remix from clips of the "Upgrade U" video which is yet to be released in the UK.

As the video progresses they are featured against several different backgrounds, including: dawn (Beyoncé) and dusk (Shakira); sheets blown in the wind; bamboo covered in yellow orchids; a room with blue neon lighting and Avestan writing on the walls; and finally a background of stormy weather. Slow dance moves and belly dancing are featured heavily throughout the video, with a breakdown after the bridge. The women wear matching hairstyles and black outfits for the entirety of video.
