Vampire Journals is a 1997 film produced by Full Moon Studios. Full Moon is famous for producing low budgeted horror films, like the Puppet Master series. The events of this film, even though filmed before Bloodstorm, take place after Subspecies 4. The film is often narrated through the eyes of Zachary, the films protagonist.

Plot

Zachary (David Gunn), a vampire with a conscience, hunts the vampire bloodline that condemned him to an eternity away from "the sun's warmth". After being cursed to live the life of a vampire, and seeing his true love cursed with the same fate, Zachary fought back and destroyed his love and master, Serena (Serena has a more prominate role in Subspecies 4, as Ash's fledgling). Zachary, armed with the sword of a great vampire slayer called Laertes, seeks out the rest of Serena's bloodline to exact revenge upon them, for his fate.

Zachary is led to Bucharest, Romania, after one of the most feared vampires of all time, Ash (Jonathon Morris). Knowing Ash's penchant for music and women, Zachary frequents music recitals until he finds Ash. Zachary, eyeing Ash, is met with disappointment when he learns that Ash is much stronger than he, forcing Zachary to look away with a mere thought. Zachary has already found Ash's next victim, a pianist named Sofia. Enchanted by her playing, Ash stalks her in the moonlight, only to be thwarted by Zachary when he approaches to take Sofia.

Zachary befriends Sofia, but doesn't want to get too close for fear that he will lose sight of his quest. Ash, in an effort to lure Sofia, sends his daytime consult, Iris (Starr Andreef) to apologize for the previous night and explain that he was only attempting to see her home safely. Ash sends an invitation to hire Sofia for a private concert at Iris' nightclub. Sofia agrees, at the behest of Zachary. Zachary, unable to get to Ash inside the nightclub, must leave Sofia to her fate, for fear that his ultimate goal will be lost. Seduced by Ash, Sofia falls victim to his bite. Over the next few nights Ash visits Sofia to drain her of more blood, so that he may turn her into a new apprentice.

Ash, after learning of Zachary's true nature and what he is planning, invites him to the nightclub. When Zachary confronts Ash, with the sword of Laertes, he is quickly overpowered by Ash. When Ash takes the sword he informs Zachary that it was once his, and soon discovers that Zachary was sired by Ash's former fledgling, Serena. Ash promises to allow Zachary to see Sofia, one last time, before he is banished from the city. When Zachary is led to a room he is surprised to find that it is not Sofia, but another mortal who is all but begging Zachary to taste of her blood. Zachary soon relents and feasts upon her. Sofia shows a strong will and after repeated attempts to kill Ash, he informs her that her friend Zachary has come to see her. When Ash takes Sofia to his room they find him feasting upon the girl. Sofia, dismayed, screams in agony at the sight. Ash has, in his own devilish way, fulfilled his bargain with Zachary.

While Ash is busy preparing to sire Sofia, he gives Iris the key to Zachary's room so that she may dispose of his sleeping body in the sunlight. But, engulfed with jealousy over Sofia, Iris goes to Zachary's room while Ash is siring Sofia, and releases him on the condition that he and Sofia leave the country. During Ash's weakest moment, just after spilling his own blood into Sofia's mouth, Zachary strikes. However, alerted to Zachary's presence by Sofia, Ash turns, avoiding decapitation, but his arm is sliced by the slayer's sword. Zachary quickly grabs Sofia and they flee. Ash, wounded and unable to transform, sends one of his fledglings after them to help guide him in their direction. Unfortunately, the Sun is about to rise and Zachary and Sofia must find a resting place if they wish to survive. Ash finally catches up to them, but when his fledgling is killed and the slayer's sword is returned to Zachary, he flees for cover from the Sun. Zachary quickly catches Ash and kills him, sending his body over the second story ledge and into the sun's rays. Zachary and Sofia find a resting place, and Zachary tells Sofia that she will "never again feel the warmth of the sun."
