Little Rock of Horrors / Dream a Little Dream is the 13th episode of The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. It first aired on October 18, 2002 on Cartoon Network.
Plots
Little Rock of Horrors
When Billy has nobody to play with late at night, he wishes upon a star for a friend. The star falls into his backyard - but it isn't a star, it's a brain eating meteorite. The meteorite tried to eat Billy's brain, but there was nothing inside his head. The meteorite uses Billy to get all of the brains in town, making Billy think that it's all just a game and it is his friend. Eventually, Billy brings the meteorite every brain in town except for one - Mandy's. When she comes over to see what's going on, the meteorite eats her brain, but with unexpected consequences. Mandy's brain overpowers the alien, causing it to melt away (and presumably die) and takes over the rock, appearing as pink goo in the shape of her head (which includes her eyes), assuming her voice and personality, and asking Billy to bring her more brains.
- Little Rock of Horrors is a parody of the musical play of Little Shop of Horrors. The song BRAINS! may be a parallel to the song "Feed Me!.", though during the song, Billy and the zombified townspeople (all the familiar suspects are there, such as General Skarr) dance a la Michael Jackson's Thriller.
- This entire episode is done in the style of a music video.
- The outfit Billy is wearing for most of the episode is a Zoot Suit from the 40s, and corresponds to the swing style of the song.
Dream a Little Dream
Billy, Mandy, and Grim eat an old, moldy, bug-infested pizza for a bedtime snack. The pizza causes them to fall asleep and have horrible dreams. Billy first dreams he meets a skunk, a deer and a rabbit, which resembles the main cast to Bambi. He soon dreams that he is being attacked by demonic bunnies. Grim dreams that Mandy is quickly multiplying and giving him an endless list of chores. Mandy enjoys her dream as she dreams that she is the ruler the world, in a number based off of "Night on Bald Mountain" in the Disney film, Fantasia, Mandy being Chernabog. She has flying pieces of pizza as her servants. The pizza monsters resemble Gyaos from the Gamera movies. When the trio awakens, there is one slice left...
Cultural References
- When the rock creature is melting after eating Mandy's brain he says "shazbot", the fictional expletive from Mork and Mindy, also in a way similar to Audrey II shouting "sh*t" upon its apparent demise in Little Shop of Horrors. Afterward, the meteor cries "What a World" while melting just like the Wicked Witch of the West.
- In Little Rock of Horror, the Meteor says "Go down to Mr. Magee's, he hasn't had a thought since 43'"; the old man is a spoof of Mr. Magoo.
- The front page of "Dream a Little Dream" is a spoof of DreamWorks animation logo with Grim fishing with his scythe in the moon.
Guest stars
- Jeff Glen Bennett as The Meteor (talking)
- Voltaire as The Meteor (singing)
- Brian Tochi as Announcer/TV Chef
Other Media
The Meteor from "Little Rock of Horror" appears as the final boss of the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy video game, complete with BRAINS! playing as background music. Billy's zoot suit is also an unlockable costume upon beating the game.
