Mingrelians are considered to be an ethnographic group of Georgians. In the Soviet censuses before the 1930s Mingrelians were grouped separately from Georgians.
In early 1950s in a purge directed against Beria, himself a Mingrelian, some members of Georgian SSR Communist Party were accused of Mingrelian Nationalism (See Mingrelian Affair).
