Photos or maps ohio

Do you know of any good PD sources for photos or maps in Ohio? Warren County Canal is in need (up for FAC). thanks. Mark in Richmond. Vaoverland 20:01, Apr 19, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks. This is a copy: Dear User:PedanticallySpeaking: Please look at my talk page (most recent item for User:SPUI). I had asked him to see what we could do about a map (or images) for the article. He has done some outstanding map creation work for other transportation article and also found image sources when I couldn't. However, if you can give him good information, maybe even a handdrawn map if possible, he may be able to create something nice for the article. I encourage you to communicate directly with User: SPUI I am having some computer broadband problems, so can't be on as much as usual. I will copy this message to both of you. And, my thanks to both of you for the good work on transportation articles, which are dear to my heart. <gr> Mark in Richmond. Vaoverland 20:23, Apr 19, 2005 (UTC)

Salve, SPUI!
Vaoverland suggested I get in touch with you re the Warren County Canal article about possibly creating a map. The route of the canal is spelled out in the article. Basically, it started at Middletown, Ohio, went southeast for about fifteen miles to about four miles southwest of Lebanon, Ohio, then turned northeast to Lebanon. It roughly ran along the route of the Middletown and Cincinnati Railroad to Hageman's Crossing, Ohio, then followed the Cincinnati, Lebanon, and Northern Railroad into Lebanon. The only map I've seen in Elva Adams's book (cited in the canal article) depicts a lazily drawn "U" shape. I did see a map in another book yesterday that says it ran through Sect. 28 in western Turtlecreek Township, Warren County, Ohio, which is bounded by State Route 741 on the east and Hamilton Road on the south. The co-ordinates for the termini are in their articles already. The railroads routes can be seen by looking at the Warren County property records . The Indiana and Ohio Railroad and the City of Lebanon now own the railroad routes. If you will search for parcel 12145020010, owned by the City and running between Hageman's and Lebanon you will find a map come up. Click on that map for a larger version. The railroad is easily picked out from the parcel map because it is a long and narrow parcel. Let me know if I can help further. PedanticallySpeaking 14:36, Apr 20, 2005 (UTC)

SPUI,
Thanks for your reply. Up there between Monroe and Middletown I recall one of the references, I believe the Bogan "Warren County Canal" piece, said the canal went north along Cincinnati-Dayton between Greentree and State Route 122. Of course, at this scale, I don't think anyone would be able to tell the difference if you weren't precise. PedanticallySpeaking 17:50, Apr 20, 2005 (UTC)

SPUI,
Thank you, thank you, thank you for the map of the canal. Wonderful that you should find this.
Could I trouble you for more maps? I've been working on the articles for townships (see my new Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Ohio townships), but lack maps for many of them. I wonder if you could zoom in on the counties of Butler, Warren, Clinton, and Hamilton and save them as individual files for me. They show the townships clearly and I'd like to add them to the township articles.
And though I said it before, thank you. PedanticallySpeaking 14:16, Apr 21, 2005 (UTC)

SPUI, I should have looked a bit closer on that map. I see that two of the Warren townships are missing; they hadn't been created yet (Massie and Harlan). Oh, well, scratch my request. PedanticallySpeaking 14:19, Apr 21, 2005 (UTC)

SPUI,
Thanks for the tip. Alas, I work at the public library, so I don't have the ability to down- and up-load or manipulate pictures. PedanticallySpeaking 16:11, Apr 21, 2005 (UTC)

Uberarticles

Misplaced Pages policy is to have subjects covering discrete topics by their common names. Commonality does not justify mixing broad topics with observable physical and history differences into super-articles; and titles are supposed to be the common names of things: Misplaced Pages:Naming conventions (common names). There is no such industry generic nomenclature as "heavy urban rail" which also more suggests commuter railroads. The generic term is rapid transit. If you wish to continue to make super-articles, I won't interfere, but please leave the individual articles alone. How can you justify making micro-articles for subway cars, but merge huge and diverse industries into one article? -- Cecropia | explains it all ® 20:18, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

A redirect is not an article; "urban heavy rail" is a non-expression; and overlap does not justify merger where there are discrete differences in understanding. Regional differences, when they are large, need to be respected rather than deciding that one or the other version or a neologism is the "right" name for the article. --- Cecropia | explains it all ® 20:25, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Rapid transit is better than Urban heavy rail, but my main argument is with the mergings. Light rail is a neologism that has a different meaning than streetcar both in existing systems and in history. There are streetcars (New Orleans, Toronto) that are streetcars first, and light rail only by extension. There are lines officially called light rail (JFK AirTrain) that are in no way streetcars.
I suggest we revert to the former names and place a poll on each article in the form:

Article merger

Should (tram or streetcar) by merged into a common article with light rail?

Yes

No

Comment

I will be bowled over if there is a consensus to merge. -- Cecropia | explains it all ® 20:35, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

1-9, F-V, J-Z

You said: By the way, note how I combined some subway services like the 1-9, F-V and J-Z. This is a similar case.

Therein is the core of our disagreement. Except for F-V (which should really be separate), these are simple clones with skip-stop being the only difference. Streetcars, trams and light rail have different discrete meanings. -- Cecropia | explains it all ® 20:48, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Trams, Streetcars, Light Rail, Metros, Subways et al

Hi.

You wrote:

I see you formerly discussed this split on Talk:Streetcar. There's a current discussion going on there now; I'd appreciate more opinions, no matter what side. Thanks. --SPUI (talk) 20:49, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Sorry to bother you again - there's also a poll now on Talk:Metro about whether metro and subway should be merged. --SPUI (talk) 21:04, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads-up. I've now voted (merge) in the metro/subway vote, and I'm pondering the other one.

I think there are two issues here. There are cases where we have two different article for what is to all intents and purposes the same animal, largely driven by the use of different names in different cultures. Metro and Subway is one such case, and (as you have noticed) I also believe Streetcar and Tram is another.

But those are easy issues compared to the ones where we have to draw boundaries between related and often overlapping terms on a continuous spectrum. So I don't think that streetcar/tram is quite the same thing as light rail, which isn't quite the same thing as metro/subway, which isn't quite the same thing as suburban rail, which isn't quite the same thing as commuter rail. But equally I cannot come up with a fail-safe way of distinguishing them. I think the only way to deal with this is to take arbitrary decisions, and then write lots of text to explain the arbitrariness. Although I worry that we try doing that on Misplaced Pages then someone will take a dislike to the arbitrary decisions, and change it all, again and again.

So on the whole, and right now, I do think we should merge Tram and Streetcar, but leave Light rail as a separate article. Now how to inject that into the discussion. -- Chris j wood 10:26, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Powel Crosley Jr.

I have been working on Powel Crosley Jr., a fascinating subject with a heavy transportation angle. I am coming up dry on PD images from LOC and Florida sources. One LOC image which has him looking to the main subject, another man, that is all. Can you help me with anything for this article? Thanks for your good work on Warren County Canal. Mark in Richmond

Category:Streets in Manhattan

Do you mean if 19th and 20th Streets are eventually added? I think it's more intuitive for people to look under "2" for "Second Avenue" than under "0", for "Seventh Avenue" under "7" rather than "0" and so forth. Can we continue this discussion (if you'd like to continue it) on the talk page of that Category page? I've always found the disjointed conversations on user talk page (going back and forth from yours to theirs) to be sort of difficult, and I'd like to get other people's input. I'm not heavily invested in either idea, but I just think it's more intuitive this way. Once (if) dozens of more Manhattan streets are added (i.e., when there really is an article for 19th Street, 20th Street, each street in the 70s and so on), then I'd say your way makes more sense. Surface rail

Fine by me, except that it's ambiguous. I would have used 'surface rail' instead of 'at-grade urban transit', but 'surface rail' could reasonably mean _all_ non-subway, non-elevated rail, rather than just trams, trolleys, light rail, and the like. How about 'Urban surface rail?' It has 3 google hits, but we can always replace it with a better term when we come up with one. jdb ❋ (talk) 23:29, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Closure templates

I've added the closure templates for you at Misplaced Pages:Votes for deletion/Washington State Route 900. Yes, it was late, but the people who close VfD debates are often too busy. By closing obvious keeps like that one, you can really help them. --cesarb 17:01, 23 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Is there a reason the closure template is necessary? I actually looked for one that had been closed properly, but couldn't find any; shouldn't the note at the top that they have been closed be enough? --SPUI (talk) 17:04, 23 Apr 2005 (UTC)
It serves to scare newbies who would otherwise vote on the debate even after it was already closed (they can get to the page if they try to nominate the article again, or from the link on the talk page). Besides, it also helps looking for unclosed debates on the log pages, since it makes them stand out from the flow.
Which templates to use is explained in some obscure location in the VfD maze; it's {{subst:vfd top}} REASON ~~~~ followed by a blank line at the top, and {{subst:vfd bottom}} preceded by a blank line at the bottom.

RfC on RickK

Hi, thanks for your note, and sorry for not being around before the RfC against RickK was filed. Regarding Waking the Tiger, I have put that one behind me and since the article has been undeleted, I regard that dispute as "solved". Since that was the only issue on the RfC where I have been involved, and I consider that issue resolved, I cannot certify the summary. Incidentally I think that RickK was within his rights to argue against undeletion, even though he was totally wrong on that issue in my opinion.

As for endorsing the summary... I have concerns about a rather meager attempt to resolve the issue with a discussion on RickK's talkpage. Also, there seems to be two articles concerned, and I feel that filing RfCs over this is a somewhat drastic approach. Therefore I have not endorsed the summary either. Instead, I decided to endorse Outside view #2 (the "back off" view).

RickK is probably the one user on Misplaced Pages I have disagreed most with. However, filing RfCs should be reserved for serious cases of disruption or incivility, and this one does not seem to be one of them. I feel RfCs against users are used too often, in fact, the only time I have really been upset with one of RickK's actions was when he endorsed an RfC against Kappa, an RfC which had absolutely no basis.

But thanks for dropping me a note and letting me know!

I-180 in California??

Hi --

I note that you added California to the list of states that once had an Interstate 180??? Am I missing something, as I'm not aware with this one... According to kurumi.com and cahighways.org, I-180 was a proposed number, but since there was already a highway 180 in California (near Fresno), it was never actually used. I know from personal experience (I used to live near there) that it went straight from CA-17 to being called I-580. --Rickscholz 05:14, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I interpreted the Kurumi description as meaning that it was officially I-180. It doesn't seem all that clear to me on either site - do you know anything definite on whether AASHTO called it I-180 pre-1983? --SPUI (talk) 05:44, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I'm trusting the cahighways site more, which says "Around 1985, the number I-180 was briefly proposed for the Richmond-San Rafael stretch of what is now I-580 and was formerly part of CA 17."

If AASHTO did actually call it that, it's news to me, and to all of the road geek web sites I visit. If anything, it was unsigned, but I don't think this is even the case. I don't think AASHTO would call it one number and the state would call it a different number... that would be way too confusing.

According to cahighways, that stretch of highway was transferred from CA-17 to I-580 in 1984.--Rickscholz 06:01, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

re: my vote(s) on RickK's RfC

Well, frankly, you seemed to be turning a question of policy into a personal referendum on RickK and I wasn't totally comfortable with that. I still maintain that the policy is on our side, and not RickK's, but I don't believe he was operating in bad faith. Given that, I feel that the most prudent course of action is clarification of policy and (perhaps) a change in said policy if called for. I hope you'll join me in trying to get consensus on the clarification. --Dante Alighieri | Talk 18:25, Apr 27, 2005 (UTC)

Pandeism vfd

Please consider changing your vote on Misplaced Pages:Votes for deletion/Pandeism to a "redirect" to pantheism. I believe I have adduced sufficient referential evidence to show that this article was not "original research," but simply an uncommon use of a term that is most commonly used as a reference to a word of similar construction. It's very easy for those not acquainted with religous details to confuse "theism" with "deism", after all, so this would be a useful redirect. I apologize for having overestimated the importance of the use of this term with which I had been made familiar. It was, after all, one of my first posts, when I was new to Misplaced Pages and not yet familiar with the criteria for notability. -- 8^D BDAbramson 06:16, 2005 Apr 29 (UTC)

  • Forget the above. I have found conclusive evidence of the use of the term "Pandeism" dating back to 1833 , being used by Godfrey Higgins, a follower of John Toland, the creator of pantheism.. The term is used in a book written by Higgins called the Anacalypsis. -- 8^D BDAbramson 10:27, 2005 Apr 29 (UTC)

  • 1893, Union Station opens, just the one. Life is simple.
  • 1898/1899: South Union Terminal is built and opens. The old Union station starts being called North for obvious reasons.
  • 1927: The old (North) Union is hacked into tiny bits and replaced by North Station (officially this time) under the new Boston Garden.
  • Informally, the North/South Station names were used "forever".
  • As best I can tell, South Station wasn't the super duper officially official name until the 1980s redevelopment, even though it was pretty much universally known as that.
  • Just to make things a little more clear, one of the Main Line platforms at what's now Haymarket was also named Union (but Friend on the other side, just to keep people guessing).

Interstate infobox?

Template:Routeboxinterstate Do you think this is overkill? It was inspired by the infobox for the California state routes... --atanamir 01:28, 5 May 2005 (UTC)

  • a couple notes:
    • the 'junctions' would only be for other primary interstates.
    • major cities would be cities with population 100,000+ (except for state capitals).
    • distances would only be two-letter state abbreviations

this should help the boxes from being too long and bulky. --atanamir 01:36, 5 May 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, i thought it looked good in concept and in theory, but when i acutally placed it onto the i-5 article nad looked ait it felt like overkill; seeing as how at lof othe inforamtion was already contained on the page. US-road-stub

Hi SPUI - It's seems like a good idea to have a separate US road stub category, but I wish you'd let us know over at Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Stub sorting! We're having enough difficulty keeping track of the stubs we know about, without suddenly discovering new ones! Stub categories should normally be cleared via a one-week debating process at Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Stub sorting/Criteria before creation. In the case of this stub, it looks good - over a hundred stubs, and fits in well with the WSS hierarchy, but if you're planning to make any more, please let us know beforehand. Oh, and if you're interested in helping sort stubs, we're always looking for new members of the project :) Grutness| 01:07, 8 May 2005 (UTC)

the proposal

You are kidding, right? I restored the original page. If Gene Nygaard wants to make his own proposal, he should create a new page, not duplicate my page. My page was first, it stays. Slrubenstein | Talk 19:48, 16 May 2005 (UTC)

Look, if I did things the wrong way, I am sorry. And if you can fix it, by all means do so. But I just insist on one thing: Misplaced Pages:Neutral point of view/BCE-CE Debate was the proposal I made yesterday, after having spent a whole day working on it. Gene Nygaard created Misplaced Pages:A proposal re BCE-CE Debate and redirected my proposal to that page so he could change the proposal and confuse people. In effect, he deleted my proposal and that was wrong. All I wanted to do was restore what he had deleted. I compared the two carefully and copied any thing different from the second to the first. But please do not tell me I should have done it the other way around. For one thing, it would have taken much more time. In fact, the first thing I tried was to take the new proposal and delete all the duplicated and out-of-order passages that apparently were created by a bug. I spent an hour doing it, and while the edit history reflected my work, the proposal page remained unchainged, that is, in a mess. But most important, he also changed my proposal in order to weaken it. He disagrees with my proposal but it is not enough for him to express himself in the discussion section and vote no, he had to vandalize the proposal itself so that it did not say waht I was actually proposing. It would be a travesty to keep that second, damaged version, and simply to accept his deletion (in effect) of the proposal I crafted yesterday. Slrubenstein | Talk 20:09, 16 May 2005 (UTC)

Is there a way to restore the history of my article? Slrubenstein | Talk 20:11, 16 May 2005 (UTC)

Road v. street

Hi there. :) I noticed that you redirected the street-stub message to the road-stub one. Now, admittedly this could be just me, but I always thought that calling a street a "road" is about as appropriate as calling someone's backyard "Central Park." A road's primary use is transportation from A to B; a street, by contrast, has many uses, and of these vehicular transportation is merely incidental. A street, as Jane Jacobs would say, provides a stage for the "drama of civilization." Not so for a road. Such are the connotations of these terms.

Probably this word choice issue doesn't deserve the attention I've paid to it, but it just seems vaguely insulting to call a street a "road." No one, not even a motorist, would dream of calling Rivington Street a "road." Something about that smells strange, maybe even a little, er, suburban, if you get my drift... :)

Anyway, would you object if I changed it back?

Cheers.

Typogfk 14:43, 29 May 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply. (You wrote: "The main issue is that we don't want an explosion of stub categories, so only ones that will have a lot of articles are created.")

Well, OK... but a street still isn't a road, and I daresay there should probably be more articles about streets than articles about roads. Says on WP:WSS that "stub categories attract experts in specific areas," but people with an interest in streets--urban theorists and sociologists, for example--won't bother digging through a billion "road" articles to find room for improvement. A "street" stub would be helpful, however. So should I just go ahead and relabel those stubs?

BTW, is this really the best way to communicate on this site? It seems perverse.

Typogfk 21:44, 29 May 2005 (UTC)

(You wrote: "Please read through the links on WP:WSS. And a street is a road, by definition.")

I'm surprised you think a "road" and a "street" are equivalent, since to judge from your user page you seem interested in urban affairs. As it says on WP:WSS, the purpose of these stubs are to attract people with an interest in the relevant topic; "road" stubs just aren't going to attract people with an interest in streets. It seems to me that the situation calls for a "street" category... right?

At the very least, we ought to stop mislabeling urban streets as roads.

Typogfk 21:54, 29 May 2005 (UTC)

OK, I'll bring it up there

Thanks. And I guess there really is no better way to communicate here, is there? This editing-pages-as-messaging has got to be the worst messaging system ever devised by man. Scattering conversations across pages and everything. Oh, well. :p

US 220

Removing US 220 from the Template:US Highways would be wrong. It is a US Highway it is not a state route, and was designated in 1926 with the rest of the highways, such as US 20, US 50.

It is a US Highway so it belongs in the list, and it is bannered a US Highway. It recieve Federal US Highway Funds. It meets all requirements for being a US Highway and is labled as such.

But you may be correct in it not being a spur of US 20 however when the Highway act was enacted in 1926 many spurs did not connect to the "mother road" although that was the intent, but I don't have a problem with you removing the Spur comment.

  • You have me confused in your thinking now. If it is a Spur route is doesn't belong in the Template:US Highways list, but your saying it is a not spur route which would make it a primary and putting it in the [[Template:US Highways where it is now. Please clarify your position.

According to MDSHA, "US 220 was an original 1926 US route" According to NCDOH "US 220 was an original 1927 US Route, but did not reach North Carolina until 1935 when it was extended south from Cumberland, MD." (I think 1927 is a typo). I can find nothing of it being a Spur which would make it a Primary. --71Demon 21:24, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Appalachian Development Highway System

First thanks for the ADHS that is a good idea.

Not sure on the lenthy, Corridor D idea. I see your reasoning, but there is nothing ambigous at this point, and I don't for see anything in the near future. I live north of Corridor H and nobody refers to it by the route numbers. It was one of the orginal AHDS highways, and for 40 years people have been calling the route Corridor H also few people know of the Appalachian Development Highway System by simiply using Corridor H it will direct people to the ADHS.

Second thanks for fixing the Corridor D vs Corridor N I was trying to determine how to do that.

Also made US 48 a disambiguation page to eliminate the confusion of the reuse of the route number several times.--71Demon 13:48, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

US 48 / ADHS

US 48 I think should remain a Misplaced Pages:Disambiguation since there have been 3 different US 48's I live 20 miles south of Interstate 68 formally US 48 and people still refer to it as 48. I also live 20 miles North of Corridor H and nobdy refers to it as US 48. No signage has been put up in WV at all proclaiming it as US 48 official maps of VA and WV don't list it as US 48 yet. Virginia has put up US 48 signs on their 7+ mile section, but they also still use the VA 55 designation. WV only uses the WV 55 and US 219. At this point if we loose the Misplaced Pages:Disambiguation page we will only add to the confusion. People still thinking of Interstate 68 as US 48 will simple think Misplaced Pages is wrong, those searching for Corridor H will get confused with the US 48 designation since they have not seen it. The Misplaced Pages:Disambiguation page allows them to find out there were 3 US 48's and if they get the wrong one the can simple hit the back button to find the correct one, learning in the process, and learning is what this is all about. I think we should keep the Misplaced Pages:Disambiguation page, until the states themselves remove the Disambiguation in the real world.

Your Corridor H + ADHS makes sense now and works for me.

The dead expressways wikicity

I noticed that you took out the link on Freeway declaring that project dead. I have no reason to doubt your diagnosis, as I've asked a couple of times on the wiki itself and on UKRoads' wiki, and gotten no reply whatsoever.

But to get to my real question, is there some de jure or de facto process used to negotiate Misplaced Pages's relationship to other topic-specific wikis? As I was setting up a poker Wikicity I felt the need to assure Angela that we wouldn't be cannibalizing WP's poker content, which only makes sense -- I'm not a big fan of redundancy. But I just wondered how this is handled in other cases where Misplaced Pages already has detailed info on a topic, and someone proposes another wiki with even more detailed info on the topic.
