Help required

I am interested in how on earth Wikipedians find and revert vandalism so quickly. I know how to revert, and I understand that WP:VIP for example, people look at regularly, but for obsucre topics that rarely get visited, how is it spotted? Please reply to my talk page. Thanks and sorry to bother you--Gabriel Webber 16:46, 15 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Range blocks

Hiya I saw you recent post at the village pump, and thought I'd come an teach you how you could have done it.

Firstly do a reverse DNS check to see the internet provider. If it's AOL give up. AOL is far too large, has far too many computers for you to ba able to block the vandal. You'll sucseed in blocking loads of legit users and probably won't get the actual vandal.

Assuming it's not AOL then proceed as follows,

64.12.116.10 through 64.12.117.22

Set the last digits to 0 64.12.116.0 ->> 64.12.117.0

do two /24 blocks 64.12.116.0/24 and 64.12.117.0/24 that will block a total of 512 IPs

Stick to /24 only if you are at all unsure about what you are doing. Note that /31 will block fewer than /24 and /16 will block a lot more. Never go lower than /16 ( I don't you you can in actual fact anyway) Also since range blocks catch innocents as well as vandals keep them short. Policy is 24 hours only I think.

Stress

Cookies!
Cookies!

You always seem to be under a lot of stress, what with dealing with trolls and vandals and people who just don't get it. Relax and have a cookie. You'll feel better (food allergies excepted). -- Cyrius| 06:18, 7 Aug 2004 (UTC)

"Wikify" entries on cleanup

A significant amount of the entries you list on cleanup are requests to wikify. Aren't you aware of the {{wikify}} template that you can place on articles that need wikifying? Just letting you know. ] 06:36, Oct 10, 2004 (UTC)

That's just what I was wondering as well. Maybe make the "wikify" category more prominent somehow? ] 06:41, Oct 10, 2004 (UTC)

Appology

Hi, Rick.

I'm up for adminship . As we share the same affinity for fighting vandalism and trolling, I would be honored if you would give your support. Warmest regards, ] 02:34, Oct 12, 2004 (UTC)

The "ß"

After talking on #wikipedia, I found that the German character "ß" is allowed in article titles in the English Misplaced Pages, as are accents and other European diacritical marks. That's why Rudolf Hess is something of a battleground. WhisperToMe 03:05, 12 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Adminship

Thanks mate, I appreciate the vote of confidence! - Ta bu shi da yu 09:52, 12 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Quick Question

I notice on your page that you say that you have stopped blocking people, and yet I think that I noticed you still blocking people - have I misunderstood? Thanks, Mark Richards 16:50, 12 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Bureaucratship

Hi, Rick. What do you think about being promoted to bureaucrat? You've been with us for over a year. Although I must admit my belief that you're not quite among the most polite admins, and there's also some controversies over you by other users, I think you deserve this title. What do you say? Marcus2 18:23, 12 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Allthough hesitant to give such kind of personal remarks, I tend to support this nomination to bureaucrat.
Also, I'm a bit disgusted by the "thank notes" re. supporting votes for adminship all over this page - I think people somewhere have started to get a wrong idea of adminship. Those who think that "adminship" has anything to do with having more power over Misplaced Pages content are somewhere missing the point I suppose (e.g. I think that in this respect a comparison with a Slashdot administrator is not possible), and maybe better for them to set a step aside as admin while they still have this choice for themselves. At least admins should refrain from voting in votes for new admin appointments in my view, somewhere it starts to have a smell of nepotism (which is never far away in bureaucratic endeauvours).

My nomination for adminship

Thank you for supporting my nomination for adminship. I will do my best to serve Misplaced Pages. --Slowking Man 00:02, Oct 13, 2004 (UTC)

Wikifun

sorry about deleting your answer there rick but you happened to place it in the wrong place. next time just keep in mind to read the instructions carefully. --Larsie 17:53, 14 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Why'd you revert me?

Why'd you revert my (very minor) change to Areopag? I don't see any point in a redlink there, and the Athenian lawmaker Draco is almost certainly the person being referred to. - RedWordSmith 12:30, 14 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Page Deletion

Since there is a clear consensus (including myself, the author) to delete "Joan of Arc (cross-dressing)", and since the associated "Votes for Deletion" page is merely becoming yet another forum for senseless bickering carried over from "Cross-dressing", when will this finally be deleted? It's been up for a vote for over a week now, I believe. AWilliamson 01:40, 18 Oct 2004 (UTC)
